Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rest Warrior Rest From: GUEST,Julia Date: 28 Feb 05 - 05:15 PM woops! Just wanted to mention that I am currently trying to track down sources and melodies for a collection made here in Maine in 1838 called Jack Downing's Songbook. Jack Downing was the pseudonym for a socialistic activist writer named Seba Smith. The preface to this boo , addressed to Andrew Jackson, is hilarious. Having fun Best, Julia |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rest Warrior Rest From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 28 Feb 05 - 12:23 AM Conrad can be careless about crediting his sources. This is copied from one of Gwen Polwarth's books; either Folk Songs of Northumberland (1966 and 1967) or Come You Not From Newcastle (1972). She got it from Thomas Hepple's MS of c.1855 (ref. Roud Folk Song Index, number 2614). You can see several broadside examples at Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads: Rest! warrior, rest Unusually, the Catnach set includes staff notation. You can see sheet music published in the US at the Lester Levy Collection: Rest! Warrior Rest; the composer [of the music] is named as M Kelly. Other sources specify Michael Kelly (1762-1826, and credit the words to W. Dimond. |

Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: Rest Warrior Rest From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 11 Jun 04 - 04:17 PM ____________ Rest! Warrior, Rest He comes from the wars from the red field of fight, He comes thro the storm and the darkness of night, For rest and for refuge now fain to implore, The warrior bends low at the cottagers door. Pale, Pale, Pale is his cheek with a gash on his brow, His locks o'er his shoulders distractedly flow, An d the fire of his heart shoots by fits from his eye, Like a languishing lamp that just flashes to die, Rest, warrior, Rest, Rest, warrior, Rest. Rest in silence and sleep in the cottagers bed, Oblivion shall visit the war weary head; Perchance he may dream but the vision shall tell, Of his lady-loves hour and her latest farewell. Pale, Pale, Pale, is his cheek with a gash on his brow, His locks o'er his shoulders distractedly flow, And the fire of his heart shoots by fits from his eye, Like a languishing lamp that just flashes to die, Rest, warrior, Rest, Rest, warrior, Rest. Illusion and love chase the battles alarms, He shall dream that his mistress lies lock'd in his arms, He shall feel on his lips the sweet warmth of her kiss, Oh! warrior wake not from such slumber as this. Pale, Pale, Pale is his cheek with a gash on his brow, His locks o'er his shoulders distractedly flow, And the fire of his heart shoots by fits from his eye, Like a languishing lamp that just flashes to die, Rest, warrior, Rest, Rest, warrior, Rest.
