Illustrations of Northern Antiquities isn't all that easy to get hold of these days. There is an online transcription of Joseph Jacobs' English Fairy Tales at http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/eng/eft/index.htm, however; and Jacobs based his re-telling of Childe Rowland on Jamieson's account. A look at that reveals more of the earlier material, though it must be remembered that it has been altered by Jacobs, and you need to read his notes as well.

Childe Rowland

Hmmm. It is certainly weird, I wonder how much of it is at least from the original narrative.

Can anyone give me information about the song "Jack Rowland" that I recently heard in the new Martin Carthy compilation -- where on earth did this amazing song come from? Like some sort of weird dream song..... Is it an old ballad, or did someone rewrite it?

yours,

Peter T.
