Subject: RE: Banjo player, Dirk Powell From: Dharmabum Date: 19 Jul 04 - 01:14 PM I've been listening to his "Time Again" album for awhile now. On which he's joined by folks like Tim O'Brien,Darrell Scott,Riley Baugus & others. He's also included some recordings on this album of He & his grandfather, recorded in 1990 I believe. Sounds like they were made on the front porch. Not studio quality, but I love it. Just a mention,if you get the Cold Mountain DVD,there's a bonus disc that includes a tribute to the movie (Music & interviews). You can see Dirk Powell & other musicians involved with the soundtrack, playing in concert. DB. |

Subject: RE: Banjo player, Dirk Powell From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 19 Jul 04 - 10:45 AM Banjo picker, fiddler, squeezebox player (married to Christine, daughter of legendary Cajun fiddler Dewey Balfa), piano player. Has at least two albums under his own name on Rounder label, worked with Ginny Hawker on at least one of her albums. An excellent all round peformer in traditional styles. His family roots I believe are the Appalachians. Highly recommended, personally I don't think he's made one duff track. |

Subject: Banjo player, Dirk Powell From: GUEST,Frank Date: 19 Jul 04 - 10:12 AM Anyone knw about an old time banjo picker named Dirk Powell? Heard him on WPAQ from Mount Airy Viginia as we were passing through. Great player...sounds kinda like early banjo (minstrel style) not a clawhammer player but three fingered North Carolina style.
