An interesting idea, Conrad--you should find a choreographer first--because you need someone who can find ways to express the energy that is already there in the artcars--then you find dancers and musicians, they will have a focus--

Works very well.....
Generally people dance around the cars and enjoy the music and buying cds etc....I sell handmade brigid crosses my wife sells our used book collection and my daughter does face painting.

From Chesham you would board the airplane and head it west to Baltimore Washington International Airport.
Call us when you get in - we are ten minutes away- you will be picked up in an artcar. No extra charge for bed and breakfast.

Artcars are a great draw here for festivals. We generally get at least 20 here in baltimore. This year I am having to turn down festivals! They want me to go to Louisville and Columbus...both too far and they get in the way of vacation time. We will be going to the shore for a few days. I will fax the local papers there in advance and we should have a crowd in the campground.....always fun! Not only that but when I take the cars downtown to one of baltimores bar districts- Fells Point people almost line up to put money in the donation slots. I generally take home between $30 and 40 on a good busy summer weekend night. Almost enough to cover my beer expenditures as the prices there are really high.....

So artcars combined with music and dance are wonderful!

Did you know that my artcar was made into a cd..?

Yes!

You can read more about it at

They sell it via cdbaby.com

A great band! even though they have trouble turning up!

Sounds like a Trojan Horse method of getting into festivals for free, with the added attraction of some earnings.

When you say within a short drive from Baltimore, I s'pose that rules out Chesham, UK...

Trouble is that the band I have been working with is famous for assuring everyone that they will turn up but often do not. Of course this is a common problem but not helpful as I promise others that folks will turn up and then they dont- and without any substantial excuse. The deposit system may help.

Artcars!
Here is my artcar web page.
http://www.geocities.com/artcars/hutmanartcars.html

to the artcars

I bring the cars to festivals where they are viewed by hundreds and hundreds of people. These are not car festivals but arts festivals with lots of music stages and sales booths. The advantage of playing around the cars is that you can get into the festival without the standard high booth rental fee and aplication process. I just write the performers in with my application and I dont pay anything.

We generally have two cars at any given festival. That means two venues for performers. I have never had an objection to cd and sales around the cars. Organizers figure since they are often not paying us they owe it to us to raise some funds.....

We also do parades....the last parade awarded us $200 of which $100 was for the band.

So there is possibility for some unexpected funds here and there.

Of course I always bring the huge cooler and plenty of drinkables and that saves us expenses of purchasing the same at high festival prices.

So....a fun and rewarding opportunity for people who are able to make committments.

We always know well advance of festival dates so it should not be too hard to plan to be there one would think. But now with the band I am working with I only get 2 of six and the last time none because the guy wanted to sleep in!

Hence....the desire for new staff.....

why didn't I think of that?....penalties for not turning up to gigs, like income tax......brilliant!

Forgive my denseness, but what are artcars?   Never heard the expression, and (at least to me) it's not clear from your post.

Ok folks this is the proposal....

I would like to have 5 or so folk musicians
6 or so folk dancers....
The concept is to extend the experience of viewing artcars out into a crowd.
I envision ring daces and wild behavior and great folk music.

The most important aspect of this is the venues.
Artcars are admitted into important venues. Hundreds if not thousands of people.

In front and around the artcars the artist can do what they want so inviting a band and dancers in is no problem.....

There will be a car/cars of amazing and captivitating artistry. Very popular. There will be space to play and dance. There will be place for sales of cds, what have you....

There will be hundreds of spectators with money.....

Committment will be from the artcars about 6-8 at most events per year.
There will be a penalty for not showing up but otherwise if you have a backup no big deal....

There will be great fun! I can promise my side of the rounds and whatever food and hospitality I can scrape up which generally is major.
There is generally good publicity.

Musicians and dancers should be local or within a short drive of Baltimore Maryland USA

As popularity grows there may be more artcar gigs. However where at all possible artcars can come to your gigs too....

The main problem with the band I am currently working with is that they are unreliable and do not fulfill promisses. We have a system which will make backing out a little less comfortable. However that is the only restriction.

Choice of music can be wide and free.
As far as dance - the same.....

The point is to extend the artcar experience into the crowd from the car.

This should create a lot of interest and many more venues.

But the main point is that musicians applying should be able to dedicate time and enjoy a good time with those who have a variety of
habits.

There is a lot of musical potential as artcars are extremely popular and attrract hundreds of people at all appearances. Lots of exposure.
You will be able to sell your stuff......lots of hospitality!

But....you have to set the days asside or find a backup. Most dates however are known several months in advance so it is easy enough.
Need not interrupt your ordinary work. If you cant make it send an understudy who will do the very simple rehersals.

Lots of potential to more than counterbalance the lack of money per gig.....

Those interested can contact me at

The type of music may varry but in part should include some celtic or other dances to be done around display of cars....some of these the rest of your choosing.....
