Subject: RE: Music about Universe n' Everything in it From: The Shambles Date: 17 Aug 04 - 04:19 PM If we could see the night sky From our nearest star. It would look much the same, As from where we are. The only difference that would appear, Is just another star in Cassiopeia. (Roger Gall 1998) That's about the size of it.... |
Subject: Lyr Add: GALAXY SONG (Eric Idle & John Du Prez) From: The Shambles Date: 17 Aug 04 - 04:08 PM My favourite. The Galaxy Song Words by Eric Idle Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown, And things seem hard or tough, And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft, And you feel that you've had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough, Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving And reolving at nine thousand miles an hour. It's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned, The sun that is the source of all our power. Now the sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see, Are moving at a million miles a day, In the outer spiral arm, at fourteen thousand miles an hour, Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way. Our galaxy itself contains a hundred million stars; It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side; It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick, But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide. We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point, We go 'round every two hundred million years; And our galaxy itself is one of millions of billions In this amazing and expanding universe. Our universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding, In all of the directions it can whiz; As fast as it can go, that's the speed of light, you know, Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is. So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure, How amazingly unlikely is your birth; And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space, 'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth! |
Subject: RE: Music about Universe n' Everything in it From: Joe_F Date: 17 Aug 04 - 10:26 AM Weisst du, wieviel Sterne stehen? Wilhelm Hey Weisst du wieviel Sterne stehen An dem blauen Himmelszelt? Weisst du wieviel Wolken gehen Weithin ueber alle Welt? :| Do you know how many stars have their place in the blue tent of heaven? Do you know many clouds go all over the world? The Lord God has counted them, that not one of their whole great number may be missing. This little children's hymn is quoted at the beginning of Norbert Wiener's _Cybernetics_, to introduce a charming essay on the contrast between astronomy & meteorology as types of science. Also in a pious vein, you might consider the Captain Kidd hymn. |

Subject: Music about Universe n' Everything in it From: axman664 Date: 16 Aug 04 - 05:09 PM I am planning on doing a concert featuring music of all styles with the theme being "The Universe and Everything in it" or something like that...basically, about the universe, stars, space, the planets, Earth, nature, etc. I will have a bunch of musicians helping, particularly a lot of folk musicians, and am wondering if you mudcatters could help me brainstorm some great folk music (bluegrass, Celtic, Americana, urban folk, etc.) about this topic. The concert would also incldude an astrophysicist-friend-of-mine talking about various images from the Hubble and other telescopes. Should be a lot of fun. To get this started, I had considered the following tunes/pieces: "Lord of the Starfields", "Creation Dream" --Bruce Cockburn Excerpts from "The Planets" --Gustav Holst "Calling the Moon" --Dar Williams Excerpts from "The Creation" --Haydn "Big Mistake" --David Wilcox "Stella by Starlight" (jazz) Any ideas? |
