Oh yes, Kitty, of course, I had forgotten that one! Instead, I am going to the AGM of the International Concertina Association this weekend, which has plenty of pub sessions & workshops (eg song accompaniment with Roy Clinging), as well as the AGM itself. I have already apologised to Judith!
[Psst: Here's a secret: I am trying to learn to play the concertina. Don't tell anyone, particularly not Tony Day! But I do promise not to attempt to play it in the Middle Bar - honest!]
"Five jolly fellows came over the hill together!"

No festivals for last 2 weekends in October?

Why are you not bringing the campervan and Sandy to Judith Snelling's all-day session at the White Horse, Maplehurst (North Sussex CAMRA pub of 2004) this weekend? Starts at noon on Saturday, goes through until closing time with, probably, break for food around 6pm.

Good grief, Donisthorpe is just up the road from me, let us all know when you fix a date and venue!

Well, Lynne, for me the last two weekends in Oct were free from festivals this year but I accept that Oct can get a bit chilly for those camping!
If you had arranged it for Sept or early Oct this year you would have clashed with (among others!):-
4 Sept - Wareham Wail / Wallingford Bunkfest / Fylde FF
11 Sept - Bromyard FF / Swanage FF / Great Yarmouth MF
18 Sept - Otley FF
25 Sept - Whittlebury Song&Ale / Concertinas at Whitney
2 Oct - Black Dog Pennymoor Song&Ale
9 Oct - Banbury FF

You are likely to clash with something therefore. So at the risk of stating the obvious, perhaps its best to clash so with a Festival in another part of the country rather than a Song&Ale close by!
Good luck in sorting out a date and venue!
I agree with Kitty, fix it asap and give an early booking discount!
"But give me a boat...!"

Ok, so if I want to attract you guys to this event, what should I do and when should I have it? It looks as though early September when we used to have it is too full of festivals. When are there gaps in people's festival calendars?

I think what I want to know is: what would be your ideal, can't miss, small festival, and when?

Lynne

Sort your venue otherwise nothing will happen. Then advertise, inviting early bookings for discount.

Trouble is, whatever weekend you pick there is another festival to clash with. Can anyone suggest a weekend which doesn't clash?

Yes Alan, no paid guests, though we may have Ted's band for a ceilidh on the Friday night. We didn't have to pay for camping before either, but the venue is one of the problems at the moment, so we'd have to negotiate. It used to be mostly a bit folk clubby really, with singing, music...whatever anyone wanted to do. If there were enough people, separate sessions would be on the cards, but before we've only really had enough for one event at a time. It's basically a "do-it-yourself" weekend really. We're flexible...any suggestions welcomed!

What sort of an event would it be, Lynne - presumably no paid guests, pay for your camping(?), concentrating on session music or singing too or what? But no matter how attactive it would be, as Snuffy says, there is still the problem of the clash with Bromyard Folk Festival and then, of course, there is also Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival the same weekend ...!

Rhiannon and I would be interested in coming and not averse to paying. (You cancelled it the first time we were going to go!)

North West Leicestershire, about four miles westish of Ashby de la Zouch. Nice and central!!

Another question I forgot before....it used to be free, but in consequence all the money for any advertising etc came out of our own pockets. Would anyone be averse to paying a small amount for the weekend?

Donisthorpe Music Weekend ran for five years but stopped about three years ago due to a combination of circumstances. A number of you have been to it in the past and (I think!) enjoyed it. We miss it and have been talking about the possibilities of reviving it. Should we do it? Who would come if we did? Should we have it at the same time as previously? (2nd weekend in September) Would anyone be prepared to help us/steward it etc? (One of the reasons it fell apart was that there were only Ted and I doing the work and , although it was a small gathering, it was still too much.)

The reason I am posting this now, is that, if we are to revive it, we will need the year to plan it and get it up and running)

Love Lynne
