Gargoyle, I'm afraid I don't understand your posting. Johnny Ball was singing The Elements by Tom Lehrer, there was no question of lyrics by Johnny Ball. I was offering to send free gratis a couple of copies I had to anyone interested. You really do seem to have a problem.

Being a chemist, I have a collection of periodic tables from the Internet. The two worst have a (conventional) poem or a Heikku for each element. Then again, maybe the one with comic strips is the worst. The one with a blog for each element is kind of interesting. Chemistry wasn't like this when I studied or taught it.

Guest: The idea has merit---but, William Schwenk Gilbert is dead---he could have pulled it off. After all how many people will use the phrase: "to your.......I hate to be a dimunitioner" (Mikado--as sung by PooBah the Lord High Everything Else).   He surely could rhyme what would seem to be unrhymable words---and pull of a great humor with insight.

         Perhaps Lehrer can pull it off also. Now---genuflect, genuflect, genuflect.

Note, however, that the order in Lehrer's song is not that of the periodic table, but was chosen for the sake of rhyme & meter.

A song that devoted one line to each element, with perfect rhythm & suitable rhymes, and forming stanzas corresponding to the rows of the table, might be of great value to students.

Check out searches for both chemistry and chemical for related items. Neither come with the "Demi said to Me" which is under science rather than chemistry.

Around 1980 I produced an EP sung by Johnny Ball who had A British TV series at the time, a kind of popular science program for kids. He sings The Elements, The Minute Waltz and Think of a Number which was the theme tune to the program. Johnny won't mind me sayin that he is first and foremost a presenter cum entertainer rather than a singer. I have two spare copies in my files and I would be happy to post them to the first two replies (PM me)at no cost.

Thank you so much for the link to the animated version. I'm a chemist, so this song has special meaning to me. I've bookmarked it with all the other versions of the periodic table which I've collected. In fact, I may use it as Fig. 7 in the paper I'm writing now.

No one but Lehrer could do a credible job of fitting any new elements into the song, and since the words suggest that others will be discovered, the original version is best left alone. If nothing else it is a historic point in time for the world of science.

My kids have actually learned that song so well they can sing along with Lehrer and pronouce it up to speed. I wouldn't attempt it! Best I can do is listen and get the last element or two in several lines of the song.

Lehrer's Elements has to be considered "folk," or at least "historical," since it omits a few dozen that have been discovered. Maybe his last line "they haven't been discovered" needs updating to "just recently discovered."

There are several threads about this, as referenced above. There's also The Formulary Song, which I wrote a quarter of a century ago. It's interesting to see how many of the drugs mentioned are no longer in use. (There's a line missing: line 3 of verse 3 should be "And Miltown, Motrin, Medrol, Maalox, Myleran and Miradon" -- note that back then Motrin was available by prescription only!)

This animated version of "The Elements" is absolutely wonderful--and it uses Lehrer's original version. Check it out!

I only know of the Tom Lehrer piece sung to the melody of The Major General's Song in Pirates of Penzance (G&S).   Amazing how he pulled it off.

Here is the DT entry for Tom Lehrer's Elements.

The Pythons (or John Cleese and Graham Chapman at any rate) were fond of this reference-book humour. See The Cheese Shop for instance. However, I think Tom Lehrer rather cornered the market on the Periodic table.

The closest Python ditty I can find is The Universe Song (from "The Meaning of Life").

I was sure there was a Monty Python song based on the Periodic Table of Elements, but on a Cat search (thanks, puss) found it was a Tom Lehrer song about chemicals.

But is there a song about the PTofE?
