Nervous can be a positive thing. If it keeps you focused, you're more likely be at your best, IMO that is. I hope your debut gig went well. Just remember, there are lots of dreamers and would-be artists out there who don't have the bottle to play/sing to a live audience. Many will envy or admire you just for being brave enough to get up there and do your thing. In their envy, some of them will inevitably be your critics. Even some of the most seasoned veterans get a case of the nerves before a show. Remember also that you can't please everybody, so just do what you do (whatever THAT is????????), and give it your best. Go with the flow and roll with the punches. Good luck in future ventures.

PS. I'm off to Brewood folk club in a minute. (Staffordshire, UK). It's a charity singers' night and I'm playing (I think).

I also had my first gig in 1952, April 21st it was. Apparently the midwife was really impressed by the power of my voice... :-)

I remember my first gig, 1952; I was so nervous my shoes wouldn't stay tied.

I've been using that since I was 18 and I'm now 23 (ish)

Guest,
The second post has not yet been answered. Where and who?
I feel sure it will be a good night for you since you have
the confidence to do it in the first place but many would
like to know the artist and venue.

Pick out the best looking person of the opposite sex on the back row and sing to them, ignore everyone else whilst singing, talk to the rest of them between songs

Break a leg

Can't say it better than Joel Mabus did.

FIRST TIMES
by Joel Mabus

My first car... was little and yellow and rusty as a bucket, it was
My first car... my first feel of a real live automobile.
Fill 'er up with oil and check the gas,
Step on the pedal - let everybody pass.
It didn't go fast or far; it was my first car.

My first drink... was down in the basement with my buddies, it was
My first drink...my first time with a sweet red bottle of wine.
Taste so funny, just made me grin,
Laugh so hard till the room began to spin -
And it wound up in the sink - it was my first drink.

First times ain't the best times - Sometimes they're the worst.
But if times are gonna get better - There's always got to be a first.

My first kiss... was out on the back porch with my neighbor, it was
My first kiss... my first taste of a teen-age, feminine lip.
She closed her eyes, I closed mine,
Our hearts beat fast as our young arms entwined -
Then her braces chipped my tooth - it was my first smooch.

My first gig... a nineteen-seventies college-town restaurant -
My first gig... sing all night for a meal and a ten dollar bill.
The crowd was loud - they couldn't care less -
Just made a lot of noise and stupid-ass requests -
Alice Cooper was big - at my first gig.

And if this here is the first time you've ever heard me sing,
Well, stick around - it might get better - First times don't mean a thing.

Just remember... It's you against them. They secretly despise you and want to see you fail miserably so they can laugh at you and make jokes about your tiny penis in giggly whispers.

Go knock `em dead, kid.

Just kidding. The audience likes you. And we're all behind you.

Making faces and holding two fingers up behind your head.

Good luck with your gig... let us know how you got on.

I did my first paid gig last week.... playing at a wake! Wasnt expecting andy pay, just a drink and some food. Quite nice afternoon in a pub 3 of us musicians round a roaring coal fire playing Irish music, while the family chatted around us.

He/she must be nervous....LOL...I vividly remember my first one....it was scary.....then the cops came bringing in the 2 yr old son who had escaped from the sitters. He'd wandered out onto the motorway and some hard core bikers picked him up and took him to the cop shop.....gads I wanted to kill him!

Aim the spear so that it strikes just behind the eyes... Oh, I guess you meant a performance gig. Sorry. Good luck either way.

Is it a "clothing optional" gig? I mean, really, we must be prepared! Good luck, Bob(deckman)Nelson
