Subject: Derek Sarjeant and Hazel King
From: Joe Offer
Date: 09 Jun 07 - 02:53 PM

Giok's link died, so I don't know what sad news he was reporting. I'm supposing it was about the death of Hazel King Sarjeant. This page has information about the Folk Matters LP. Is it available on CD now?.
Here's the text from the Website:

English folk singer Hazel (King) Sarjeant was born in 1948. Hazel's beautiful, pure voice was recognized at an early age and by 15 she was performing at folk clubs in and around London. In 1967, she won the national "British Folk and Beat Contest" held at Hammersmith Town Hall, London. The next year she was invited by Derek Sarjeant, operator of the Surbiton and Kingston Folk Club. one of Britain's largest and most popular venues, to join him as a resident singer. Together they hosted virtually every touring American folk artist daring the 1960s and '70s. In 1968 they formed the Derek Sarjeant Folk Trio with Graham Bradshaw. and continued to perform as a duo after Graham's departure, ultimately marrying in the mid '70s. With a brief pause in the mid-to-late-'80s to raise their children the duo performed continuously until a few months prior to Hazel's death. Her warm and engaging personality was only surpassed by the beauty of her voice. She will be sadly missed. especially by her husband Derek and family, and all those she touched with her music and her grace.

    Sarjeant, Hazel (King), English folk singer, d. 8/12/2003; b. 1948. Sing Out! v. 48 no. 1, Spring 2004.

The album is called Folk Matters, and Derek and Hazel are accompanied by Steve Benbow on guitar, and Paddy Marchant on concertina. It is Assembly Record JP 3012, and was recorded at Chalk farm Studio by R Aitchison. I asssume it was all released by Derek himself, as he ran the Assembly Rooms Folk Club at Surbiton, and the cover was designed and printed by Hazel. I have a signed copy, and can supply a track list if anybody is interested. There is no date of recording, and I can't remember when I got it.

Hi Joe Offer
These are the lyrics I have from a tape by Derek Seargeant and Hazel King it is a very old cassette tape and I do not know the original albumn that it came from: Thanks also for the words from TRADSINGER, very very similar.

AS I WAS GOING TO CHILLBRIDGE FAIR
TO ME HEY HO DERRY DERRY DOWN
AS I WAS GOING TO CHILLBRIDGE FAIR
TO ME HEY------------------------------------
AS I WAS GOING TO CHILLBRIDGE FAIR
I MET PRETTY SALLY A SELLING HER WARE
AND AWAY WITH MY SALLY I DID GO

I ASKED HER WHAT SHE' SELL TO ME
TO ME HEY HO DERRY DERRY DOWN
I ASKED HER WHAT SHE'D SELL TO ME
TO ME HEY---------------------------------------
I ASKED HER WHAT SHE'D SELL TO ME
SHE SAID SHE'S A LOCK BUT SHE HADN'T GOT A KEY
AND AWAY WITH MY SALLY I DID GO

I SAID MY DEAR CAN I COME WITH YOU
TO ME HEY HO DERRY DERRY DOWN
I SAID MY DEAR CAN I COME WITH YOU
TO ME HEY--------------------------------------------
I SAID MY DEAR CAN I COME WITH YOU
CAUSE I'VE GOT A KEY AND I THINK IT WILL DO
AND AWAY WITH MY SALLY I DID GO

BETWEEN THE HOURS OF ONE AND TWO
TO ME HEY HO DERRY DERRY DOWN
BETWEEN THE HOURS OF ONE AND TWO
TO ME HEY-----------------------------------------------
BETWEEN THE HOURS OF ONE AND TWO
THE LOCK DID OPEN AND THE KEY WENT THROUGH
AND AWAY WITH MY SALLY I DID GO
(REPEAT VERSE 1)

Chilbridge Fair

As I was going to Chilbridge Fair
With my hey ho, derry down down
As I was going to Chilbridge Fair,
With my hey
As I was going to Chilbridge Fair
I saw pretty Sally a-selling of her ware
So along with my Sally I did go.

So I asked of her what she sold today, etc
Oh, I've a lock without any key, etc
So along with my Sally I did go.

Oh Sally dear, if you'll not deny, etc
I have a key which I will try, etc
So along with my Sally I did go

So betwixt the hour of twelve and two, etc
The lock was open and the key went through
And away from my Sally I did go.

Collected by Hammond from Charles Whiffen of Sandford, Dorset in November 1906 and published in "The Constant Lovers". Verse 3 above was composed by Frank Purslow, the compiler of "The Constant Lovers".

According to the Roud index, this is the only version collected with that name, although Roud does bracket it with Strawberry Fair - collected only once, in Devon in 1891.

Enjoy.

Gwilym

Hi, Jackie - I see that a number of versions of "Strawberry Fair" have been posted - I added crosslinks at the beginning of this thread. Can you post the lyrics you have for "Chilbridge Fair"?
