Oh I forgot to thank David from Italy - that was a nice start for the evening

20000 houses were hit by the power cut - we were lucky as 7000 were still without power on Sunday

One thing - the bar staff did get flustered in the power cut as without the till they had to do all the maths in their head and the beers were difficult to pull without power

Many thanks for all the nice comments - I hope to see you all around the folk world in the coming months

Hi Rhiannon - sorry I didn't get a chance to chat to you - you were stuck down the dark end & I didn't see you leave - I hope you had a good time and many apologies

I'm hoping to get to Ampthill to support Guru

Well done Ross

Had a great evening. So much talent, so many lovely people. I am so pleased that I was able to be there and be a part of it.

Thanks, Mick, for singing "Joe Peel", one of my favourites. Didn't see the going of you - hope you both had a good journey back home.

I'd only met Julie for the first time on Friday but already I'm hooked. Where has she been all this time?

Thanks everyone for making it such a special event.

The "Italian", by the way, is Davide Calvo a new member of Herga Folk Club.

Christine

Martin, not a go against Bob. He had plenty of time for his locals which is good to see these days. Thats what makes a good publican in my view, but it stopped there. Thanks to Ross the event was Great. see you both at Ampthill on Tuesday ?

What a soooooooooooperb night! Such variety, (including in variences of prices for the same rounds) such entertainment, such enthusiasm. I feel guilty that I didnt contribute more for such a great afternoon and evening and that I 'only' managed to attend from 4.30pm till 12.30pm. Wish I'd been there sooner. Nevertheless, What a great night. I'm sure we all learned something and expanded something (two eyes probably expanded his waistline but I'll stop there).

Well done Ross! Well done Folkaholics, well done everyone! Songs and playing that really moved me, particularly Julie, The Ref with his paradise song - he encapsulated my two songs in one perfectly, his combination with Christine, the Italian (?) guest.... I don't mean to leave anyone out but must leave space for others to congratulate you on a fantastic night... Historic in my mind...

The candlelit atmosphere was almost too perfectly timed. (I have my suspicions as the lights came on to Mick Pearce singing about the lightman.) Reminded me of scenes I saw on a website showing candles lit on a beach spelling out Hope made out of tealights and brown paper bags:

http://la.indymedia.org/news/2005/01/121700.php

You should all be proud of yaselves! 'Part from the usual friendly barmen...

Like Martin's unicorn, two eyes and I are more than a little horse today...

Very well done, Ross. To have squeezed so much moolah from that bunch of itinerant and impecuniate folkies (even for so good a cause) is an amazing feet!
It was really good to see all those old faces again - and not only faces but feet and other bitz as well.
Some of them, of course were considerably enhanced by the sympathetic candle light....
Don't think I'll be able to make this Monday - I spent too much on petroleum and firewater on my 2 visits on Saturday. Hope to see you Monday week though.
It was a tremendous effort all round - give yourselves a clap (or any other preferred social handicap).
Cheers

Well said Bert - I forgot to thank Pat for all her brilliant work on the door - I owe her a brandy

Don't forget there's a singaround at the Pub tomorrow (7th) - I can understand comments made - it is a difficult question - it's all a shame

Robb Johnson's on at Herga if you want to boycott us

I'll be at the Bull if anyone wants to twang along with me - I may practice the Wild Rover

What a fabulous day, well done Ross!!!

Really enjoyed the event but wish I'd come along earlier as one of the Quire members commented to me that it was pretty difficuly doing 4 part harmony from scores during the power cut. That must have been a challenge!!!

Heard some superb performances - wonderful to have Mick Pearce (Guest MCP) come all the way from Worksop, and as for Julie Ellison, what can I say - where's she been hiding her light? she's absolutely Fantastic!!!!

Also good to hear Moses & The Ref, they're doing very well, an excellent combination.

Looking forward to your next event Ross, but must echo the comment about the Pub Management, things seem to have gone downhill with them, may be time for a change although I really hope you can keep the venue!

£ 253.00 raised for the tsunami appeal - well done

Cheers everyone and thanks for the great day and night

Sorry about the power cut - Bedford terrorists again; seeking independence - it all added to the spirirt and ambience - like the blitz

Many thanks to all the main performers - Julie Ellison (and for all her great promotion works & wow factor - Tipex?), Folkaholics (Martin, Derek, Cathy & Trevor), George Papavgeris & John Breeze (very well behaved), Christine Moses and Steve singing ref, Mick Pearce, Mike Sparks OBE, Hilary Ward, Andrew & Martyna, The Bedford West Quire, Life & Times (Barry G & Graeme M), Bert Tann, Roy Hollowel, Rita, Yvonne, Selina & Ian Rennie & Jane Carrington

Special thanks to Bert Tann for the use of the PA which due to power cut was largely unused

And many thanks to all who came along and contributed to the cause

Perhaps we'll do it all again one - I'll dictate it when we are ready

Sorry for all the shouting

Hope you are well Piers - come and save our forests

Ross

over 20 at redbourn for Fleggy tonight, and a very good show he put on.

good job the Windward residents showed up or there would have been noone to hold the first half together.

Steve and Christine and Mike Sparks.

dont think many people realise who and what Mike Sparks is and has done , sorry , Mike Sparks MBE, apart from doing the bookings for herga and writing and producing stage productions and writing songs that have passed into the Folk tradition. heraud and turner sing at least one of his songs and are among his many admirers.

tonight, friday 4th do come please and preview Julie Ellison at the legion in St Albans, she's doing alot for the Tsunami promo this week end, so please come and support her and find out what she's all about.

you can buy books of raffle tickets these days about £1.25

heres a CD

SCROUNGE ALERT

ANY DONATIONS OF GIFTS FOR SATURDAYS RAFFLE WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED

Publicity wise:

We are in the local paper tonight - The Luton & Herald post have given us quite a nice write up under a big banner

Julie will be mentioning us on 3 Counties (John Pilgrim) tomorrow about 4 o'clockish - Friday

Anyone got any raffle tickets we can use?

I won't ask about the open/close thing - I think the gossip's quite amusing

So if you can on Thursday, that would be much gratutued. 7.00pm Sat, for The Folkaholicks. Cheers. Also you could find out first hand about this open or close thing.

Oh - I wondered what that was all about

I suppose you're going to tell me HRH Prince Charles was there as well

Reminds me when the neighbours dropped a sparkler in the firework box and a lady from across the village (the next morning) said - `that was a pretty firework you had last night'

Hi Martin - yeah, I only changed me vest in the end - JB examined me armpits - they failed the freshness test

The Blue Anchor was okay - a chap from Ipswich turned up and he was very good - we missed you all - there seemed to be more listeners than singers

Can you book a table at the Bull? - Are you sure you're not confusing the Bull for the Ritz; or do you mean in the function room for the do - or is it for a meal in the front?

Hope the practice went okay?

That does not stop you normally Ross. Don't forget Singaround at The Redlion in Radlett on Thursday, run by Nick Male. How did The Blue Anchor go Ross? See you on Saturday. By the way can you book a table for four of us for Saturday at 7.00 o'clock at The Bull when you go next please. Cheers. And then confirm back here by Friday night. Cheers. We were going to go to The Blue Anchor tonight but we had our last practise before the main event on Saturday instead. Yippeeee.

And hello Bertie, I am glad you mentioned the singaround on Thursday cos I thought it was on Wednesday. Can't make Thursday cos it is a "Folkaholicks" practise night. Say hello to Nick for me please and will you ask him the plans to go to Ireland are getting on, some of us still want to go. Cheers. Are you coming to The Blue Anchor Tuesday night?

I'm playing dominoes this Thursday - were away at the Crown - tough match - I won't be free on Thursdays for a while

I hope Chris is well supported - I have great admiration for him - but I do find all those twiddly bits a bit boring - as I get older; I find more straight forward delivery more appealing - I've done with worshipping Bill Nelson

Up folk clubs everywhere

Guru - do try and get to Barton by five as there is a 20 strong 17th century choir turning up to sing provocative period songs; dressed in authentic costumes

Do support Thursday club at the cricketers in redbourn where Chris Flegg is playing and Janet could do with a bit more help.

fleggy is a trifick guy and probably the best guitarist you could ever wish to see and hear.

come to that so could we in St Albans!! where fleggy frequently hangs out

Sessions are fine but do support your local folk clubs where you can hear great songs by some real great talent and its not that expensive either.

Will try and persuade LanFranc to join me on the songs we've rewritten for Tsunami Fundraising that we're doing at WaveAid (see separate thread).

We've also got a DVD with images for a backdrop/intro/whatever that twoeyes put together if you'd like to play it-will give to Martin Wed. Will be there soon as 2eyes has finished his stint in town. Well done guys for your organisation/enthusiasm. Some other organisers (not mudcatters) losing the focus a bit of why we're doing this! Fun, folks and money!

Ref Maidenhead song competition - one of the rules is that the song must be written this year (on or after 1.1.05).

The last competition had some great songs - El G's "Circles in the Air" and one of Breezy's favourites, "Bevin Boys" by Tony Green (the winner)as well as many other good songs.

Good luck to all who enter (me especially)

Firstly my thoughts are that if we have fun and expand our repetoires on a regular basis and give enjoyment to others I don't see the harm in being able to raise money for those who have been hit by tragedy at the same time on at least one of these occaisions (its not a legal obligation remember!) It could also do some good to the folkworld by expanding the number of people who become involved in folk by creating a special occaison that wouldn't normally attract their attention.

Secondly, there is a worrying rumour which is incorrect and being spread in that the relief fund is oversubscribed. It is important this is set straight as it does no good to this or other organisations (or any charity) collecting to fund their efforts.

The rumour stems from a a misquote of a statement Medecins Sans Frontiers made when it expressed its appreciation and provided feedback on the support it had received and estimated that it had received sufficient funds for the FIRST STAGE of their work for this disaster. Whilst MSF have invited donors to consider donating to one of their other appeals and listed links to them, they did not say anything about shifting funds donated to them for tsunami relief to other areas or that the fund is oversubscribed. You will also appreciate that it is very difficult to estimate how much will be required to rebuild people's lives. After all, how do you estimate the cost of a lost parent, child, sibling or all of the above to a family or community as a whole. What price do you put on putting preventative measures in place, not to mention hospitals... It could be us on holiday in future. At the end of the day let's make some good come from this and have some fun! I know its helped finally get my creative juices flowing and to meet some new interesting talented people in the process!

For anyone interested in the truth of what MSF have said about closing their tsunami appeal this is copied from their website www.msf.org.

"MSF clarifies donations for Asian tsunami disaster relief. MSF teams are working day and night to provide assistance to people affected in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Myanmar. More relief projects will be launched by MSF in the coming days and weeks. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has received an extraordinary outpouring of support for the people in the areas surrounding the Indian Ocean†through its network of offices worldwide. To date, the contributions MSF has received since the tsunami struck the region are estimated at approximately 41 million euro for this emergency. MSF estimates that we have received sufficient funds for to the first phase of our work †at this †disaster. MSF teams are working day and night to provide assistance to people affected in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Myanmar. More relief projects will be launched by MSF in the coming days and weeks. It is therefore too early to evaluate the total cost of the MSF operations in the regions struck by the tsunami. We have an ethical obligation to explain the use of funds raised by MSF for the tsunami relief and to ensure that we use all funds for the purpose for which they were raised. MSF will continue to assess the financial needs as the scope of our operations in the affected areas becomes clearer. In this emergency, like all others, we relied on the constant support of people to respond quickly and effectively. MSF was one of the first international organisations to respond in Aceh because of the support we already had and we need this continuing support in order to react in the future. These ongoing MSF funds have enabled us to respond quickly to the current disaster as well as to the humanitarian needs in other crisis zones worldwide, such as in war-torn Darfur, Sudan, and elsewhere in more than 70 countries in which MSF is working. †Many of these countries are †in dire need of emergency aid. MSF wishes to express its gratitude to all private donors who have contributed to MSF's efforts in providing emergency relief assistance in the wake of the Asian tsunami. "

Breezy was in short but excellent form at Hertford, a great rendition of a great song. You should try and make it Ross if you can fit it in. It has great ale good acoustics and it could be the biggest Mudcat base in Hertfordshire. Cool. By the way Ross, I have a belated Christmas Present for you from Selina and two eyes Iain.

Hi Martin - Monday was fine - I mentioned it on the other thread

I think the emergency relief fund is oversubscribed - I was thinking of donating the money raised to one of the longer term projects

Such as Oxfams' supply of fresh water projects

How about the Folkaholics finishing the evening with the last spot?

Can someone give Vanessa a lift to the Bull from our home on Saturday?

You could hide in a big cardboard box with your guitar, and pretend to be a Folk Duke Box charge people to play some songs.
