I defy anyone to go to sleep when I am playing the feadog (penny whistle)! And my Bodhran. Unless, of course, they are medically sedated, and then I would doubt it.
   I cannot go to sleep with Music playing (unless it is so soft that I can barely hear it, as I have been trained to actively or attentively listen to Music--the form, the key, the harmonic or chordal structure, the instrument &/or instruments, the harmonies, the rhythms, the lyrics, whether the singer(s) (if any)would be sporano, alto, tenor, bass, the language the singer is singing, . . . , etc., etc. If I somehow fall asleep while the tv is on, when Music is played, it wakes me up.
   
***However***, yes, correctly chosen Music can lower heart rates, calm, relax, and the opposite, too. Hayden wrote his "Surprise Symphony" for the royal court's weekly listening enjoyment after the midday meal. The lovely, soft strings lulled the folks to sleep with a tempo a bit slower than the average heart rate, then a quite loud chord was sounded and so on it went. He did this BECAUSE some of them would usually fall asleep during the weekly concert. They were unable to sleep through that entire symphony.

Folk Music is as the blood flowing through your veins it twists and turns but always manages to enter the heart and mind. Folk Music is the essence of all musical styles and cultures and defines modal and textural qualities that have prevailed for centuries. It is the music of the oppressed and the music of the bourgeousie. The music of Church and Stadium, the music of you and me.Folk Music is both dated and timeless and everything in between and if you want it to be a sedative I am sure it will be.

Well, I have to say that if I'm doing something else, folk music is annoying. I much prefer vocals or rock. You have to listen to folk music, or else it grates on you. It demands your attention. I love to listen to folk music when I'm driving. when I'm home, I listen to one song as I'm studying it - and I may listen to it a few times until I've let all aspects of the song singk in - but rarely do I listen to an entire album other than when I'm in the care.
And yes, folk mjsic is nice to listed to when I'm falling asleep, if I happen to be by myself. That doesn't happen much now that i'm a married man.
And playing folk music in the house when others are around doesn't seem to work - it impairs communication. Usually, the only music we have on when people are around, is classical.
But I really do love folk music - when I'm able to pay attention to it.

"soft, slow tunes" - clearly whoever wrote that has only been exposed to a narrow range of folk music. Give them a blast on the warpipes to wake them up...

Yep, heartbeat rate. I keep telling this to shops that play modern pop. It drives people out with its wrong signal. if you want people to browse in peace,heartbeat rate music keeps them looking! And do they believe me? Nooo. "It's company policy music"!!!!!!!!!!
