Violin Strings

I haven't been in the chat room, but I'll offer my opinion and hope people will be polite and civilized if they've already heard this.

Lilyfestre, it doesn't matter whether or not you're playing just for your own enjoyment. What matters the most is the number of hours you play. I change my violin strings every 6 to 12 months, and I'm always surprised at how much better the violin sounds. If your string keeps going out of tune, the problem is much more likely to be the peg than the string.

Perhaps the peg is just slipping....it might be a bad fitting. There are various products you can get to prevent the pegs slipping. You might want to try those first.

I play every other day for an hour or more, but it's just playing for my own enjoyment....not a lot of stress on the strings. Any suggestions? The strings seem to be staying in tune for the most part....darn A string seems to be REALLY out of tune each time I play lately but I have been chalking that up to the bizarre weather/moisture patterns. Could be I just need to change the string?

It depends on how often you are playing. When I was at college and playing every day and playing in professional orchestras it was the advice I was given and I have pretty much stuck to it. If the fiddle is used often the strings naturally wear out and they slip and don't stay in tune. I change them on a regular basis and always keep a spare set in my case...

Really the advice I would give is whatever works for you adn your fiddle.

About every 3 months or sooner if they break before hand....
