Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: Les in Chorlton Date: 05 Apr 05 - 12:39 PM Probably right Foolestroupe, I have difficulty counting in so that me (mandola) and a not inexperienced guitarist can start together. I tend to start then he joins in when he 's ready much less tension! Perhaps a conductor could point and grunt at paople? |

Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 05 Apr 05 - 08:36 AM Like a lightning rod, you mean, Les? That would appear to be the role of a folk conductor - to drain away the tensions leading to fights.... |

Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 13 Mar 05 - 11:39 PM Well, we do appreciate having someone say "Repeat." I've been trying to get people to say "Repetez" instead because the French sounds classier, but no luck so far. How do you say "repeat" in Italian? |

But as an ex-pipe organ player, it is not quite the same as others method of doing it... z:p) Yep, I can read full orchestra score.. always wanted to get paid for being a conductor... |

Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 13 Mar 05 - 04:26 AM "many classically trained persons have great difficulty keeping good time without a conductor" The B grade ones - yes! The thing that they have forgotten is that you MUST keep time for yourself - and also be able to play by ear when playing with others. Classical Quartets (violins viola and cello) never have a 'conductor'. Incidentally a Symphony Orchestra can play quite well in time together without a conductor standing out front (well, everybody does have their music in front of them!). Everybody takes their timing lead from the 'Orchestra Leader' or the Senior Desk First Violinist (they watch his bow tip! - down stroke for first beat of a bar, usually, but not always, depends on the phrasing). When a teenager (before WWII), my dad was Assistant Leader of one of the private Symphony Orchestras in Brisbane - this was before the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. When the leader would get called away, he would lead. In the 1950s, when the QSO would come to Bundaberg where we lived, he would take me backstage at half-time & afterwards to have a chat with some of his old mates from earlier days - I used to get autographs for the conductors too - I remember Henry Kripps. Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: buttonbox Date: 13 Mar 05 - 03:50 AM I agree about the feet tapping at two or even three different speeds - just try leading a session in a long narrow room where neither end can see or hear the leader in the middle - bit like a 'sturmey archer' session! i.e. 3 speed. just to give things a furthur stir - many classically trained persons have great difficulty keeping good time without a conductor whereeas foot tappers can at least keep an eye on everybody elses feet & hopefully keep some sort of synchronisation that way - your turn Robin. bb |

"Folkie Music Session" - a bunch of folkies playing commonly known tunes on assorted instruments in unison, each tapping their feet to a different timing... :-) |

Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 12 Mar 05 - 09:04 PM "conductors are required by those classically trained persons who are not brought up to keep time with their foot (or feet). This is of course a terrible affliction that us uncouth folkies do not suffer from!" Ah - a typical ignorant comment by someone obviously WITHOUT any real musical training - especially proper training about playing in a group! Obviously a self taught know it all Each instrumentalist - and vocalist - can hear themselves BEFORE they can hear someone else a distance away - the bigger the group, the longer the delay due to distance. As an example, I was a trained Pipe Organist from a large church building - you hit the keyboard, the sound starts from the pipes about 60 feet away - travels PAST you, reaches the congregation up to 100 feet or more away - those in the back before the front, then their singing travels back to you ... talk about delays.... but it sounds good to the congregation - the audience! In a 100 piece orchestra, they will all look at a common source of timing - the conductor. This allows the music to reach the AUDIENCE - [for classically trained musicians, the most important part of the performance, unlike self taught know it all (Don't start denigrating others when you haven't walked a mile in their shoes and you don't know what you are talking about!) Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: buttonbox Date: 12 Mar 05 - 03:59 PM conductors are required by those classically trained persons who are not brought up to keep time with their foot (or feet). This is of course a terrible affliction that us uncouth folkies do not suffer from! A conductor is something different from a session leader whose function is to keep the session going and preferably to ensure that there is something on the agenda for everybody and also to stop anyindividual or group from 'hogging' the session. George Garside will be doing his 'well known tunes at a steady pace' type of session at Moor & Coast festival at Whitby in May, Saltburn in August and Whitby Folk Week, also August. He will not be doing anything at the interim Sidmouth Festival this year. |

Subject: RE: Wanted Folk Conductors From: Les in Chorlton Date: 12 Mar 05 - 12:24 PM It's hard to see how 10 people trying to play the same tune at the same time is anarchy. Perhaps closer to socialism than free market capitalism? |
