John Colter has quite a story in Wikipedia. Here's just part:
John Colter (c.1770–1775 – May 7, 1812 or November 22, 1813) was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806). Though party to one of the more famous expeditions in history, Colter is best remembered for explorations he made during the winter of 1807–1808, when he became the first known person of European descent to enter the region which later became Yellowstone National Park and to see the Teton Mountain Range. Colter spent months alone in the wilderness and is widely considered to be the first known mountain man.

Wow, I haven't heard of this since I read the story in the Weekly Reader back in grade school. Talk about a blast from the past.

Sing of the bravest mountain men
Sing of the strong and the fleet
Colter's courage was in his heart
And his speed was in his feet

That's the chorus I remember, from the Disney TV show.

Dan Thomasma & Terry Yazzolino sing JOHN COLTER on their album "We Proceeded On, Songs of Lewis and Clark" which is advertised at CD Baby. There is a sound sample on that page.

Howdy Lora,

I seem to remember Fess Parker doing that one in a movie, so I'm guessing that it was in "Westward Ho the Wagons." See if it's in the video rentals.

As a child I remember playing an album of folk songs that included a song about the mountain man John Colter and his infamous Colter's Run from the Blackfoot Indians. I believe the album may have been produced by the Disney Corp.
