OEDIPUS REX (2)[DT Lyrics]
(Tom Lehrer)

From the Bible to the popular song
There's one theme that we find right along
Of all ideals we hail as good
The most sublime is Motherhood

There was a man though who it seems
Once carried this ideas to extremes
He loved his mother and she loved him
And yet his story is rather grim

There once was a man named Oedipus Rex
You may have heard about his odd complex
His name appears in Freud's index,
Because he loved his mother

His rivals used to say quite a bit
That as a monarch he was most unfit
But still and all they had to admit
That he loved his mother

Yes, he loved his mother like no other
His daughter was his sister
And his son was his brother

One thing on which you can depend is
He sure knew who a boy's best friend is

When he found out what he had done
He tore his eyes out, one by one
A tragic end to a loyal son
Who loved his mother

So be sweet and kind to mother
Now and then have a chat
Buy her candy or some flowers or a brand new hat
But maybe you should let it go at that
Or you may find yourself with a quite complex, complex
And you may end up like old Oedipus
I'd rather marry a duck billed platypus
Then end up like old Oedipus Rex

Here are corrected lyrics, working from Crystal's version and the Kevin Burke recording.

"Oedipus Rex," by Mark Graham
Kevin Burke's Open House, Hoof and Mouth

I killed a man where three roads meet.
The truth to you I'll tell.
He drew first, but I was faster
And I buried him where he fell.

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex,
Another sad story of death and sex.
You killed your pa and you married your ma.
They don't even do that in Arkansas!

I solved the riddle and I killed the Sphinx,
And I saved the whole damn town.
Some dirty rounder had murdered the king,
And the queen and I boogied on down.

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex,
You're the one no one suspects.
'Cause you killed your pa and you married your ma.
They don't even do that in Arkansas!

Oedipus, Oedipus, come here quick.
There's a plague that's a-coming on down.
The gods say the man that murdered the king
Is a-living right here in town.

Call the blind man, get him here fast,
'Cause he'll know what to do.
Oedipus, Oedipus, you'd better get right
'Cause the murdering man was…you!

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex
How could a guy get so complex?
And he killed his pa, and he married his ma.
You're gonna get a lickin', so ha ha ha!

I killed my pa and I married my ma.
You'd think my life was cursed,
But every afternoon on the Donohue show
There's a story that's a-ten times worse.

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex,
You ought to meet my cousin. He's Oedipus Tex.
He killed his ma and he married his pa.
That's a thirty-dollar fine in Arkansas!

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex,
Oedipus won't be needing his specs.
He killed his pa and he married his ma.
They don't even do that in Arkansas!

The song that Crystal posted above is OEDIPUS REX by Mark Graham. It appears on his album "The Funniest Songs in the World," 2002. Kevin Burke also recorded it on his album "Hoof and Mouth," 1997.

Not sure if this is the one, but still here is the version I know. It might not be complete:

OEDIPUS REX

The truth to you I'll tell.
He drew first, but I was faster
And I buried him where he fell.

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex,

So the queen and I boogied on down.

Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex,
How could a guy get so complex?
You killed your pa and you married your ma.

Oedipus, Oedipus, come here quick.

i lookied up on ther sing out! web site and there is an index of all
songs published...but it went form Ode to a Gym Teacher to Oh, America.
no Oedipus. Here is Mark Graham and Orville Johnson's web page
http://www.mongrelfolk.com/ i am looking there now...
here is a quote from a review:
"Mark Graham's song "Oedipus Rex" is the Greek classic condensed and updated with a wry sense of humor. I was thrilled to discover this is their third record for Green Linnet."
on May 12 these three songs were played on a radio show...
# Mark Graham & Orville Johnson: Oedipus Rex Kings of Mongrel Folk no label (206-932-4971)

# Severn Darden: Oedipus The Sound of My Own Voice and Other Noises Mercury OCM 2202

# Tom Lehrer: Oedipus Rex The Remains of Tom Lehrer Rhino R2 79831
