PAPA'S BILLY GOAT
Here's another goat flagging song - it was sun to the tune of Rueben and Rachel!

Papa bought a great big billy goat
Ma she washed most every day -
Hung her clothes up on the line
That darned old goat he came that way.

He pulled down the old flannel shirt
You ought to of herd those buttons crack -
I'll get even with the son of a gun
I'm gonna time him across the railroad track.

Tied him across the railroad track
The train was coming at a powerful rate -
He belched up that old red shirt
And he flagged down that darned old freight.

Went to the depot and bought me a ticket
Walked right in and I sat right down -
Stuck my ticket in the brim of my hat
And the doggoned wind blowed it out on the ground.

Conductor came round and "give me your ticket"
I had to pay again or get left on the track -
I'll get even with the son of a gun,
Bought a round trip ticket and I ain't comin' back.

Hi, CM - sounds like "Bill Grogan's Goat," a favorite of old-time Boy Scouts. It's in our database, and you can find it by putting goat in the search box - or be lazy and [click here].

My great grandfather would sing this song to my father when he was a child. Can anyone help with the words?

Some words consisted of

There was a man whose name was work
Whose wife bought him a scarlet shirt
The goat ate the shirt off the line
....
The goat was tied to the railroad track
And coughed and kicked with might and main
And coughed up the shirt and flagged the train

That is all me father can remember.
