I agree that she is phenomenal. I've been aware of her for a few years now here in Halifax as she has come to more and more attention from the more mainstream reviewers. She's often billed as singer/songwriter which places her in the "folk/traditional" genre. BUT!!! if you listen to her, she's a throwback to a jazz torchsinger! An amazing voice and how she sings is simply a delight! Watch the Canadian Juno awards. If the voters can wade their way through the vast entries they probably get, she will win at least one Juno, very deservedly!

Since I last created this (rather lonely) thread Jill has come quite a way, from basically busking at the Saint John Market to having 2 Juno nominees (she should win, deserves it) and won the 2007 East Coast Music awards for best female artist and best album of the year.

She contradicts any of the old folk whining about the fact there are no new, young artists/songwriters around these days.

For those of you who tune in weekly to the CBC's Vinyl Cafe radio show on saturday mornings you would have heard her today.

She's brilliant, refreshing and very much talented.

again .. for those that are interested here's her website.

An accolade here for a brilliant young Canadian artist, songwriter and peformer by the name of Jill Barber. I have her latest cd and have seen her perform. She's outstanding and deserves some mention here at the Mudcat.
