Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: GUEST,Jon Date: 21 Aug 05 - 06:09 AM There are various error messages coming Sandra but nothing that would enable me to hazzard a guess as to what might be up. Dave has made an observation at folkinfo that would make Mr Happy's link unlikely. Those reports suggest a server shutting down and most of the time we are seeing some response, just the wrong response. |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: freda underhill Date: 21 Aug 05 - 06:08 AM I got the same messages. Sandra. Although I don't often post there, I often go in to have a peep. But right now, its no go. At least I've now got the link for folkinfo, and have bookmarked it! freda |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: Azizi Date: 21 Aug 05 - 06:08 AM Hello Sandra, I got up early {it's about 6:03am where I am in Pennsylvania, USA} and I was curious to see if Mudcat was up-Yep- and if the Annex was up-Nope. The message I got was that "This page can not be displayed". :{ |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: JohnInKansas Date: 21 Aug 05 - 02:48 AM It probably has nothing to do with the Annexe server, but a news flash from one of my regular sources (dated Thursday 8/18) says that the latest worm (Zotob or something like that) has been morphed into more than a dozen variants within the first week after it's appearance and seemed to be targeting Servers almost exclusively. A couple of big systems have even admitted they got hit. (The being hit isn't too rare, the admitting it is.) I haven't heard anything that would suggest there's a major flap on, but my own connection (dial-up) has been extremely slow on several sites where I go often enough to expect better, and at least a handful that I visit only occasionally seem to be among the missing for the last couple of days. Rainy weather is a more likely explanation, but as long as you can't solve a problem wild speculating can be fun(?). It appears that many, if not most, of the variants are being turned loose by self-sytled "white hat hackers" who think they've got something that will kill the original worm(s). The problem with that is that the traffic induced by so many similar worms all crawling around in the same systems seems fatal to the systems as well as to the worms. One test setup reported rapid infection with 10 separate variants all trying to kill each other. As indicated, I have NO news to indicate that any specific servers may currently be having a problem, or that any specific server might have this problem; but servers and ISPs seem to have been the main targets since Zotob popped up about 2 weeks ago, and some have reported down time because of it. Individuals with unpatched Win2K systems would be vulnerable, but seem not to have been hit too often. Still time to get the patch maybe, if you're running Win2K. There's some question about whether other OS may be attacked by at least one of the variants, but no confirmation from the experts. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: Azizi Date: 20 Aug 05 - 02:42 PM Okay Jon. Like I said, I kinda sorta understand what you've "said". Best wishes on a speedy fix of whatever so the Annexe can be back up again. I just checked at 2:35 pm Eastern Standard time and it was still down. And Mudcat was down the last time I had checked, but it's back now so... who knows.... |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Aug 05 - 01:20 PM As it stands, Azizi, I'm not worried about anything like that BTW - just hoping it gets back up quickly... |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Aug 05 - 01:18 PM I'm guessing you are worried by a comment I made at folkinfo, Aziz. The situation is that my ISP hold the data, and we try to take a weekly backup mostly just in case they did a runner, got hit by an airoplane, decided we werne't fit to be hosted and ditched us without letting us have our data back, etc.. The ISP themselves should not be (and I don't think they are or I would not use them) so incompetent as to loose our data but even if that happened we have got some cover although maybe we would loose a few days. |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: Azizi Date: 20 Aug 05 - 11:50 AM Jon, I understand what you wrote.. {kinda; sorta}. And I'm waiting patiently impatiently for the Annexe to come back up. I hope that you won't need to reconstruct threads but if you do, I saved alot of the children's rhymes thread, with the poster's name, and date but without the times. Let me know if you need those posts. Azizi |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Aug 05 - 09:26 AM Sorry Azzi, our uptime is normaly good but these things can happen... Just wish I could give an answer as to what is up there or an expected return. Using others hosting (where possible) has many advantages (ones at our levels I wouldn't swap from) but when you are down like this you can be as lost as any user as to what's wrong and powerless to do anything. |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: Azizi Date: 20 Aug 05 - 09:14 AM I also thought it was my PC. I've never experienced the Annexe being down before. Alright, I'll go and read the folkinfo thread. Positive vibrations, Azizi |

Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat annexe From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Aug 05 - 08:50 AM Yes, I'm aware of a problem at the Annexe. Had posted earlier it folkinfo, that being the only site I could access at the time. Details here I still can not find out what the problem is. I apologise for this downtime. |
