yes, the software called "Nero" is probably the most famous and possibly the most complete system for making you own CDs...but there are other choices...some free see this page of audio programs voted on every year by folks who know...if it's in this list, it's a good program.

I use iTunes. But if you want to do a little more complicated editing, SoundEdit 16 is really simple to use.

Personal preference here is Nero Burning Rom ...but I've not had much experience with the others ... I do know that Windows Media Player 10 is not very 'intuitive' from my personal experience ... seems like whenever I use it I have to reteach myself on how to burn cd's with it...and most of the time I just give up and use Nero.

I think you need first to investigate whether the site you are intending to use has the appropriate licences (eMusic.com does) which mean that the artists will be receiving the mechanical fees due to them.

Music is available in various formats in many places..ultimately YOU will have to decide about some of them, depending on the uses you intend. There are many totally legal sources posted here at various times.....though maybe not always exactly what you may be looking for.

Some groups and artists post small samples of their work....some folks post older stuff that is not a problem. In other places, like 'newsgroups' it is a mix of legal, illegal and borderline..(like a 20 year old album that may still be 'owned' by someone, but looks like it is never going to be released to CD. A lot of folk music, especially the older stuff, is not actively traded and 'stolen'....but artists still need to make a living from their current work, and would not appreciate new releases being pirated.

If you are going to assemble copies of other's work and make and sell CDs for your own profit, it is clearly wrong....if you are just planning to listen to a song that you always wondered about, and maybe don't intend to 'keep', it gets harder to categorize.

I often look at the binary 'newsgroups' to see what is there, and use my own judgement about whether to download it. To do this I simply use a newsreader like Agent.....(if you don't have access to newsgroups, and don't have broadband access, you are very limited anyway) There are some special programs designed just to download 'binaries'...that is, music, pictures, videos...etc..but you need to know which ones you need for different applications.

Not a short answer, is it?.....Sorry, but there just IS no short answer to the question.

Well, in Canada, it's legal to DL using BitTorrent, eMule, Kazaa or any number of other Peer-to-peer file share programs...

People here FTP MP3s back and forth all the time, with no regard for 'legal' so why not join them?

http://www.eMusic.com is legal, cheap (1st 50 tracks free) and has better range than most (which isn't saying much). Download as mp3 and store on hard drive or burn to CD if you want.

When I last checked out commercial download sites there was no folk music available. (Amazon has an extensive list of folk CDs on the other hand). This may have changed in the last few months but so far I have only seen the occasional track on individual band sites.

At least the OP includes the word "legally", a change from the freeloaders who expect artists to be supported on social security.
