Re. your query about folk music in Plimmerton-Kapiti- Wellington area.
Levin Folk Club is only a short drive north of Kapiti.
We meet on the second Friday of each month, at 7:30pm.
Our audience varies between 50-90 people .
The address is: Horowhenua Scottish Society Hall, corner of Bartholomew Road and Middlesex Street, Levin.
Our club format is to have an open blackboard concert for the first half, (visitors - sign up to perform with the door reception -initially 2 songs for each blackboard performer, later reduced to one song to get through before supper time). We have a very good sound system and sound technician. Blackboard followed by free supper, then a guest performance .
Guests for our first meeting of 2006 - Feb 13th- are a group called Jade, from Wellington/Kapiti area. Jade are Dave Chadwick, Mike Dew, Peter Conway. They play mainly trad Irish and English folk - the line-up is acoustic guitars, mandolin and bouzouki and occasionally other bits and pieces with all members of the group doing vocals.
The Levin Folk Club also have a small practice session/workshop, very informal, in a member's home, on the fourth Friday of each month. Ask for details at the club night, if interested.

The Molly Mallone's crowd on a Monday night is a good one. I have been there several times on my visits to Wellington. Nice bunch of people of all skill levels.

The Bunker Folk Club over in Devonport (opposite Auckland) is a nice venue too.

I'll be there with a white Mitsubishi van with ladders on the roofrack, and Gurney on the window. Dark blue and beige tent. I usually camp in a little laarger with friends, so someone around there is likely to know me, but by my sometimes name, Chris Marden.
Mudcatters welcome at my camp. If anyone is travelling light, I can supply a pup tent.
If you can't find that, I'll possibly introduce Lew Black's session.

Shellback party is arriving late afternoon Friday and are sharing 9 caravans on site. So find the encampment and you have a party of 21 including 2 NSP players and 7 mudcatters.Better than the national average.:0)

I will be attending the The NSP AGM on Saturday morning. We all have Shellback shirts but I don't know how many are bringing Mudcat shirts. Two of us have triple citizenship to include NSP.

We are all looking forward to a wonderful visit and to hearing and making lovely music and song.

Maybe catch up with you in Wellington, Fossil in NZ. My tour plan means that I will hopefully get be in Wellington on Sun 12 & Mon 13 Feb. I see there are folky events at the Wellington Acoustic Routes FC on the Sunday and Molly Malone's Bar on the Monday. Will I see you there?

Hope that you are going to Auckland Festival Jacko. It will be lovely to meet somone from the "old" Paltalk days when there was great singing till the early hours (UK time)most nights - and good conversation.

Most Shellbacks have sizeable non-seasong elements in their repetoires so some great song sessions should ensue over the weekend.

Sandy's still is enjoying the antique banjo I bought from you at Whitby!
But, oh dear, don't say I will just miss you in NZ, as I will be there for four weeks from 22 Jan.
After the Auckland FF and a week's tour with the Shellback Chorus, I will be heading off to tour the southern part of the North Island, via Hamilton and Egmont National Park. I am hoping to get to the music (or music & song?) session at the Theosophical Hall, Church Street, Palmerstone North on Friday 10 Feb. Don't say you will be gone by then?
I then plan to go down to Wellington and then return to Auckland by Sat 18 Feb, probably via Hastings. Are there any particular folky events I should look out for Little Robyn or Gurney? I play the English concertina for several morris teams, as well as singing mostly traditional English songs.
