As I remember Ernie Ford's version, I thought it was kind of hokey.

My favorite is the 1928 Jim Jackson recording (Lyrics in thread 9707, linked in previous post).

I have a 78 record I purchased in 1940 with Tennessee Ernie Ford and there are probably better versions of this song but if so I never heard them.He uses a trumpet through out the song and it really gets yor attention,in fact it adds everything a tune needs to make it stand out

Yeah, that's about the length and short of it, Q; mebbe my minor was misremembered.

It was over 21 years ago, so that would explain it. :)

Hmm... not the way I learned it, but who knows. I know two version, one of which is slow and uses a minor transition, the other of which is lively and sounds more like a banjo tune.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: OLD BLUE (from Peggy Seeger/Lomax)
From: Q (Frank Staplin)
Date: 28 Dec 05 - 01:57 PM

Chords "As sung by Peggy Seeger." p. 310, Alan Lomax, FSNA, no. 157. Probably different from Pete's, but interesting.

Lyr. Add: BLUE
Guitar 2A or 6A
Banjo 1, 2 or 4B

(D)Had a dog (G)and his (A7)name was (D)Blue,
Bet you five bucks he's a (G)rounder, (A7)too.

Chorus
O (D)Blue, Blue, (A7)Blue, O (D)Blue.
(after each verse)

Every night just about dark,
Blue goes out and begins to bark.

Blue treed a 'possum in a 'simmon tree,
Blue looks at 'possum, 'possum looks at me.

Blue got sick and very sick,
Called for the doctor to come right quick.

Called for the doctor and the doctor come,
He says, 'Blue, your huntin' days are done.'

Old Blue died and he died so hard
Scratched little holes in my back yard.

Dug his grave with a silver spade,
Let him down with a golden chain.

When I get to heaven first thing I'll do
Take my horn and blow for Blue.

Come on, Blue, come on, Blue.
There's a 'possum in Heaven for me and you.

With music. P. 310.
Alan Lomax, 1960, "The Folk Songs of North America," Doubleday & Co. Inc., Garden City, New York. Melodies and guitar chords transcribed by Peggy Seeger, Piano arrangements by Matyas Seiber and Don Banks.

Pete Seeger has withheld lyrics and music of his version of "Old Blue" and his other copyright songs from internet providers, according to www.kiwilyrics.com .

Not what you ask for, but two versions of lyrics for this old mountain and African-American song are in thread 9707 and the Baez lyrics are in the DT. Old Blue
Several sets of chords are available through Google- Enter "Old Blue" chords.

(G) Well, I had an old dog and his (C) name was (G) Blue,
Had an old dog and his (D) name was (G) Blue.
Had an old dog and his (C) name was (G) Blue...
Betcha five dollars he's a (D) good dog (G) too...
"Here old Blue"
(D) "Good dog (G) you"

Some other folks may have slightly different chords--and you can use a D7 where the D is. Hopes that's accurate. I have never played the song, but those chords sound right--or jus' about.
