"Nope... that I toss in for free!"

thus, we have the expression "generous to a fault".

happy? me? Relieved, maybe...

"being competent requires being rude and arrogant also?"
Nope... that I toss in for free!

"be glad it's not MY world"
So we're both happy then Bill....

so....being competent requires being rude and arrogant also?

I do agree about the 'test' for computer users, but I'd load it with tests for being personable and friendly....be glad it's not MY world, Clinton ;>)

Seeing as you seem unable to follow the thread of the conversation, that's probably a good thing

If it was my world, there would be a TEST one would have to pass before you were allowed to connect your PC to the Internet...

For that matter, there'd be a test you had to pass before you were allowed to BUY a PC...

It would be WAY harder than a driving test....

Be glad it's NOT my world....

I'm giving it a try. It is interesting. The blurr averages the edges so it isn't necessarily as crisp but it is more esthetically appealing.

SRS

Was there any need for that comment Clinton? Are you trying to show off or something!!!!!!!

The above is the minimum requirement for it to work as stated by Microsoft.

Intolerance by smartarses like you is what cuases a lot of people never to use computers.

" You must have a video card and supports 256 colours
For best results you need a video card and monitor that supports 16 bit high colour."

If you don't have that by now, you need to go back to the mid-20th Century where you belong...

It is meant to improve the readabilty of large screen fonts.
Standard is meant to be for desktops
Clear type is for most laptops and other flat screen monitors
It specifies whether to smooth large font sizes to make screen fonts more readable on your screen
For best results
You must have a video card and supports 256 colours
For best results you need a video card and monitor that supports 16 bit high colour.

Apparently, an interesting side-effect of the Windows XP Clear Type font smoothing is that since smaller type is more readable than it used to be, web designers are using smaller type. In the throes of creeping middle age, I find this makes it less readable. Fortunately, most browsers will let you increase font size (usually under the "View" menu), and if the web site designer is good, that won't screw up the page.

I wonder if a lot of folks for whom this might be a problem (i.e., older folks) are also those who might not be savvy enough to know about Clear Type (to get a clearer font) and the "increase text size" option.

I was first alerted to these options by the "About this site" section of www.concertina.com .

on mine, I found when I enlarged the page up to 180-200%, the 'standard' was better. The 'clear type' option showed stair-step pixels much sooner. It is an interesting setting at 100%, but I can get better effects using different type faces.(I have...oh, about 2000 to choose from, of which maybe I have tried 10-15)

You live and learn...

It doesn't seem to affect graphics, picture or video display on my monitor. Only text. Useful option.

ok, I tried it...what it 'seemed' to do was make the current typeface look more 'bold'...I will do some tests to see how it affects other displays.

It's kind of like the old "Screen Font Smoothing" option Windows Plus users could have. Except it does the opposite.

A quicker way to get to the Display Properties tabs is to right-click on any blank part of the desktop and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. A quick way to change your desktop image, screen resolution and/or screen-saver too.

Mainly meant for use with LCD monitors, it apparently does increase readabilty of text on any monitor.

Not sure what effect it has on images and other media though.
