Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: BanjoRay Date: 27 Apr 06 - 06:37 AM I'll be there in three hours - say 2.30, as will several others, so there will be Old Time music being played in the Hall grounds this afternoon and either in the Ship or in the grounds this evening. For people who don't play Old Time but would like to learn, bring your instrument. You can sit near a session and pick the tunes up - we never play them less than a dozen times through, and if we get in a good groove we'll keep it up longer still. If you play a string band instrument, you're VERY welcome. Ray See y'all at the Hall! |

Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: BanjoRay Date: 26 Apr 06 - 05:20 PM Good idea, Geoff - there's some great songs out there. I know the first 6 words of loads of 'em. Like the Webfoots! Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: Geoff the Duck Date: 26 Apr 06 - 03:16 PM There tends to be a lot of music at Old-time events but not a lot in the way of old time songs. We thought that it might be an idea to set a bit of our weekend aside for songs and stuff which might require retuning for a specific song or tune without it having to be an extended set in that tuning. Unaccompanied stuff and gospel would be welcome - we might even listen to flamenco ted..... The ducks would like to welcome anybody interested in having a sing, to join us in the "Duckpond" at some time (to be arranged) during the weekend. Quack! Geoff the Duck. Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: BanjoRay Date: 25 Apr 06 - 06:21 AM It's the Old Time counting system based on one banjo = four and a half, which means there'll be at least 300 at Sewerby, including my 4 and a half. Ray |

Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hols From: BanjoRay Date: 18 Apr 06 - 07:32 PM Well John, I thought it worked fine last time without the Musicians Only notice. Fiddler John O'Connell from Sussex is coming up again, and Dave Proctor and Rita are going to be there probably sunday - monday. It's looking good so far. Ray |
|
Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: Geoff the Duck Date: 18 Apr 06 - 03:43 PM Don't know the set-up at the event so can't make specific comments. I'm not in general in favour of Musicians Only, but it has also to be balanced against having enough room for musicians to get into a session. If you exclude people who do not yet play, they might be put off getting involved at a later date. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: oombanjo Date: 18 Apr 06 - 03:30 PM Updates, longer period to play, more time to get sober, I will be seeing Tony at the Ship Wednesday this week. he has offered to close the end of the bar with a note "FOR MUSICIANS ONLY"which means most of us will not be able to get in, I will get a list of his beers for the next posting. What are your feelings about closing one end of the pub "for musicians only"??? I enjoyed the public interaction. See you soon Oombanjo |

Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: nickp Date: 02 Apr 06 - 06:11 AM Your fiddling is better than mine Ray and as a mandolin player my left hand should work.... it doesn't! And as for the right, it's hard playing a fiddle with a plectrum! Have a good week. Nick |
|
Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: BanjoRay Date: 01 Apr 06 - 05:44 AM My fiddling's still pretty useless, but I'm off to Sore Fingers (Kingham School, near Stowe-On-The-Wold) in a week's time to spend 5 days getting the amazing Rayna Gellert to teach me everything she knows. Mind you I've done the same over the last few years with Kate Lissauer, Beverly Smith and Brad Leftwich with very little noticeable difference, so I expect I'll still be mostly sticking to banjo when I get to Sewerby. Ah well... Ray |

Subject: RE: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: BanjoRay Date: 29 Mar 06 - 05:16 PM The map link gives an error message, Mudcat sometimes seems to insert it's own address in front of the link address, so just strip the mudcat part of the address out of the address box, and the link'll work. Subject: Old Time - Sewerby Hall, May Day Hol's From: BanjoRay Date: 29 Mar 06 - 05:01 PM Sewerby Hall, The first of the FOAOTMAD old time music camps will happen this May Day weekend. This year, the Hall management loudly encouraged by Oombanjo, are allowing us to arrive after lunch on Thursday 27th April and staying till the morning of Wednesday 3rd May. The same format as last year applies: Sewerby Hall is on the coast just North East of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. Here's a map Camping is free if you're a musician or a dancer or a friend of same (or even married to one!).There are washing and toilet facilities, but no shower, unless Oombanjo can sort summat out by then. We'll have use of a wooden dance floor being brought in from Cumbria by members of Legs Levens the dance team formally known, I believe, as Limestone Cowboys. At least two dance teams will be around for at least part of the time - the Bootleggers of Scunthorpe - for whom I have the honour of playing the banjo - and Wicked Soles from the Peak District. There will be many musicians playing in Old Time sessions here and there around the gardens or in the Orangery with its superb acoustics, and people will be welcome to join in, sit and listen or get out a board and do some flat footing. Oombanjo's also bringing a marquee, which will be great if it rains or blows. Other types of musicians aren't barred (with the possible exception of drummers and bodhran players!)- last year Flamenco Ted came - boy are we broad minded. Evening sessions will take place in the Ship, an excellent pub just over the road from the Hall, run by Tony. All music and noise in the field will cease at midnight - even Ted. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=79951&messages=63 and this one'll be even better (it says here) If you sing, dance, play fiddle, old time banjo, guitar, mandolin, autoharp, lap or hammer dulcimer, mouth harp or string bass don't miss this!
