Subject: RE: Origins/Lyr Add: Anthem of the Rainbow From: Richard Bridge Date: 16 Oct 06 - 11:44 AM I missed your input on the tune Joe, sorry. I have no idea how to do MIDI, ABC, or Noteworthy, but I could sing it/play it for you if you were passing.... Is it any use if I offer to post (mail) a cassette tape of appalling quality, if I make one? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Anthem of the Rainbow From: Joe Offer Date: 06 May 06 - 02:05 AM Hi, Richard - you'll note that I combined this thread with the "origins" thread. In general, it's best to have one thread for one song, and not separate out tune, chords, lyrics, origins, and whatnot. Incorporation into the Digital Tradition is an extended process, and there's no guarantee that every song posted at Mudcat will be selected - singer-songwriter songs and songs without tunes are given lower preference, after traditional songs with tunes. The longer process also may give others a chance to offer comments and corrections. However, the song is now posted, and it is immediately available to anyone who wants to look for it. Do you happen to have a tune in MIDI/ABC/Noteworthy for this one? It's a good song. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Anthem of the Rainbow From: Richard Bridge Date: 05 May 06 - 01:45 PM Maybe I am missing some element of protocol here - or mabe all mudelves are too busy resurrecting dead cats, but this rather good song is still not in the digitrad. Is there a reason, or am I just premature in asking? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Anthem of the Rainbow From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 May 06 - 02:21 PM This does not seem to have found its way to the digitrad, so "refresh" |

Subject: RE: Anthem of the Rainbow (Lyr?) + Authors? From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 May 06 - 09:42 AM According to this page, there was a Robert Cosbey who taught English at Roosevelt College in Chicago in the 1950's—it says he was an inspiration to one of his students, Shel Silverstein. Coincidence? |

Subject: Lyr Add: ANTHEM OF THE RAINBOW From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 May 06 - 04:47 AM In the absence of any messages saying these words are already in the Digitrad, here they are. Amazing how many 60s protest songs are so relevant today! ANTHEM OF THE RAINBOW Forest Tollis and Robert Cosbey Jr (approx 1963) If all the grasses are yellow What colour are the tears That are shed for all the young fellows In the armies along the frontiers? Ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh. If all the grasses are purple What colour is the sky Under which young men are marching Though none know the reason why? Once you dressed in the colour of flowers But now you're dressed in black And watch at the window for hours For the men to come marching back. And what if poppies are orange And what if roses are red? What cares a girl for flowers When the one she loves is dead? If all the rivers are golden And silver the colour of rain When will a maid and her soldier Be together again? And what does it matter If October leaves are brown If your love since last September Has been sleeping 'neath the ground? Rpt 1st verse. |

Subject: Anthem of the Rainbow (Lyr?) + Authors? From: Richard Bridge Date: 01 May 06 - 05:39 PM At the Sunday session at the Good Intent at Rochester Sweeps Festival ny daughter Rachel sang "Anthem of the Rainbow" and we were asked who it was by. We didn't know - only having my late wife Jacqui's transcription of the lyrics to go on. The mudcat seems not to list the song, and a google produced only offers to sell me a copy of "Odetta sings folk songs". So a consult of the sleeve notes since Jacqui had owed a copy already reveals (from the 1963 recording) "by two young Chicago songwriters Forest Tollis and Robert Cosbey Jr". Before I post the lyrics, are they in the mudcat and I am simply failing to find them? Secondly, google reveals nothing else about either of the two stated songwriters. Are they known for anything else? |
