Subject: RE: Review: Has anyone seen Malinky lately? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 17 May 06 - 07:14 PM Saw them at Edinburgh Folk Club not long ago: the new female lead singer Fiona, is great, and she also plays 'cello (watch out, 'cellos are taking over the folk world!!)And they also have new guitarist/multi-instrumentalist, Ewan. My only reservation was with their interpretation of "My ain Countrie" as they only use the B tune throughout and also it becomes "count-er-ee". Karine P has just brought out new CD which I have yet to hear. |

Subject: RE: Review: Has anyone seen Malinky lately? From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 17 May 06 - 10:02 AM I listened to some audio samples from their latest album. When the female is singing it's magic, but when the blokes are singing it's not magic! |

Subject: RE: Review: Has anyone seen Malinky lately? From: My guru always said Date: 17 May 06 - 09:12 AM Thanks for this info about the current line-up - I had been wondering how they're getting on without Karine. I'll make a point of going to see them again if I can. |

Subject: Review: Has anyone seen Malinky lately? From: GUEST,john devon-roland Date: 16 May 06 - 01:34 PM I saw Malinky in Carlisle recently, they were super. Their former singer has had great success in her solo career, but having seen them play about 4 years ago and now with their new line up, they were really exciting. There's a greater delegation of singing responsibilities (the lads do a great job in their own rights) and their material is still interesting takes on essentially traditional ballads. As a live show, they were pretty polished performers and reminiscent of "the good old days" when folk artists were proper entertainers and storytellers. If anyone hasn't seen them since Karine Polwart left, make a point of doing. The new line up demonstrates they were never just a one trick pony, and it's a bit of a shame that they haven't maintained a higher profile in the last year. Has anyone else caught them lately? JDR |
