Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 21 Jun 06 - 12:32 PM I thought Saturday's session actually happened on Sunday? Maybe I had too much beer last weekend! |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: GUEST,Karlos Date: 21 Jun 06 - 11:43 AM I have to say the performance level at the Fringe festival was superb. I thought the Saturday session at The Foresters stood out. It was a very busy session full of songwriters who played some great originals. It was the best session I've been to since The Sun used to get really busy and lively! How about a Sunday session at The Foresters from now on?? Well done everyone. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Nick Date: 20 Jun 06 - 11:50 AM Yes - but I wasn't listening. Were you really talking about England's chances in the world cup or did I mishear that bit? :) |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Daithi Date: 20 Jun 06 - 10:35 AM Yes Nick, that was me - glad you enjoyed the day! It was lovely to bump into another Irish speaker too - I think Andy was as surprised as I was - and yes, we were having a natter in Irish just outside the beer garden. Did you hear us then? We usually try to be discreet around the English!! ;^) Slán go fóill Dáithí |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: the one Date: 20 Jun 06 - 09:06 AM Thanks to everyone who turned up for the songwriter's session at the Forrester's on Saturday afternoon.Musicians from near and far. It was a delight to listen to some really good original songs. Hopefully this will become an annual event |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Nick Date: 20 Jun 06 - 08:17 AM Similarly - thanks to Mick and others who compered etc Enjoyed Saturday afternoon in Monks Walk it was great fun. Daithi, you'd be the chap with the whistle and the Irish conversation with the lad who was sitting at the table we were on then I presume? (Enjoyed your whistle playing) |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Paco Rabanne Date: 20 Jun 06 - 07:04 AM It was a fab weekend all round, my new frock got many admiring glances. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: John J Date: 19 Jun 06 - 06:10 PM I'll drink to that! (Mind you, I'll drink to anything). A superb weekend made all the better by the nice people we met....especially the ones who asked me to sing and didn't complain when I did! Many thanks to all, John |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Willa Date: 19 Jun 06 - 09:41 AM Made it to the Monks Walk twice on Saturday-the perfect venue on a hot day Thanks to Mick and to Maggie for their compering and to all those who sang/played. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Daithi Date: 19 Jun 06 - 05:00 AM Well, didn't manage to track down Blerk or others at Hodgsons as planned...but spent a cracking afternoon in the Monks Walk beergarden at a singaround looked after by Ossonflags. Many thanks Mick- a cracking way to spend the day! Dáithí |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 16 Jun 06 - 08:02 AM Not a great lot of difference, probably. Again it all depends on who turns up at which session. I imagine that the Woolpack will include some fine Northumbrian tunes and that both sessions will have plenty of standard session tunes. There should also be quite a few tunes on the barge 'Syntan'. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: GUEST,Domnull Date: 16 Jun 06 - 07:15 AM Just wanted to ask - what differences are there likely to be between the sessions at the Tiger and Woolpack on Sat afternoon? Different format? Different types of music? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Daithi Date: 16 Jun 06 - 06:54 AM I'll look out for the frock or pinny then Flamenco Ted! Blerk - I'll aim to catchup with you in Hodgson's at 12noon then - although my preference is for session rather than singaround, so may well try to take in other venues in the afternoon. Slán go foill! Dáithí |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: ossonflags Date: 16 Jun 06 - 03:20 AM Aint got a lot of hair to care for these days elteddo. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Paco Rabanne Date: 15 Jun 06 - 08:22 AM I bet the gift is a hair care product eh Les? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Jun 06 - 07:51 AM I won't be sure of the time, Mick (depends on if our lass is working) so I'll hop on a bus. But we did visit Pocklington this week, and we have a small gift for you and Mrs Flags. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: ossonflags Date: 15 Jun 06 - 04:09 AM See yer at six then - or before. Do you wanna a lift Les? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 06 - 05:32 PM It's both, Laurie, very much depending on who's there. It'll be around the room, pointee's choice; a song, a set of tunes, a poem, a monologue or a slow strip to music. You could try an email to the Beverley Folk Festival office, but we'll try to have a programme available at the session. Mr Van - Deanmeister is on the staff at Monk's Walk, which serves a delightful choice of Guinness (both types) and several skilfully hand-drawn real ales. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 14 Jun 06 - 04:45 PM Thanks for the info about Hodgson's. Is it a song session or a instrumental one? Also I can't find out when Brendan Power is on - apparently it is act 19, but is that in the main venue on Sunday evening or when? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Kampervan Date: 14 Jun 06 - 04:18 PM Whoops!!!!! Sorry about that -- nice Monks Walk landlady. Didn't realise. I'll try to make up for my deadful mistake by buying lots of liquid lubricant when I visit your renowned establishment. Cheers for putting me right, Les from Hull. Bigbird and I are looking forward to getting back up there. (Hopefully won't need a jumpstart from Deanmeister this year!) K/van |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 06 - 04:00 PM Monks Walk is a pub and the landlady is a mudcatter, so be very careful what you say, even if you are being subversive. All the fringe places are licensed except SYNTAN, and the campsite itself. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Kampervan Date: 14 Jun 06 - 03:53 PM Hodgsons sounds like a cert to kick off the weekend on friday night. But, for later on, is Monks Walk a bring your own alcohol? If you're part of the Fringe then don't forget to be subversive - (see Tilley in the main festival thread). I never knew that having a great time just singing and listening to others singing, could be such a machiavellian, dark experience. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 06 - 03:51 PM We'll get there as soon as we can. I'll be there mid-afternoon, with Mags as long as she's not working. The fringe prog has us down for 6pm, and we can do that easily. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: ossonflags Date: 14 Jun 06 - 03:35 PM You are always welcome "Bloke" Loads and loads and loads and loads of people have been asking me what time the "iced gems" will be served on Friday Les? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 06 - 03:05 PM It's the nearest pub to the Festival Camp Site. In fact the back of the pub adjoins the campsite (how very civilised). Friday's shenanigans will be hosted by the lovely and fragrant Maggie and myself and will be in whichever room we are allocated (hopefully the one at the front as the acoustics are good. At other times we have had to use the main room because we've had too many people, but that room is massive and much harder to work. See you there! |

Perhaps I might go to Mr McGarry's shindig at Monk's Walk later in the afternoon. The sessions are generally very good, look forward to seeing you there. BY THE WAY, WHERE IS HODGSON'S? |

Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:06 AM Jane - the fringe part of the Beverley Folk Festival is an informal series of singarounds (people taking it in turns to sing songs) and musicaians sessions (people playing tunes together) or mixtures of the two taking place in pubs throughout the weekend. It doesn't feature 'artists' as such, though there will quite a few excellent singers and players taking part. Your website should concentrate on the offical artists playing the festival, but you could mention informal pub sessions in Monks Walk, Hodgsons, the Sun, the Tiger, the Woolpack, and on the 'Syntan', a barge moored on Beverley Beck. I apologise if I've missed any out - perhaps other will post here with better information. |

Subject: RE: Beverley Fringe Fest From: Daithi Date: 14 Jun 06 - 07:21 AM Hi Ged - I'm in Hull the night before, so am hoping to drift over to Beverley to see if there are any sessions on Saturday noon onwards. Maybe I'll bump into you at one of these venues then..should I bring a B flat whistle? I don't think i know many of the other mudcatters by sight, but if anyone spots me please make a wandering paddy welcome! Dáithí |

Subject: Beverley Fringe Fest From: GUEST,Jane, thisisull.com Date: 14 Jun 06 - 01:34 AM Anyone know any artists playing Beverley Folk 'Fringe' fest? There doesn't seem to be any info on it on the festival website. I know there was some stuff going on at Oddfellows last year. |
