We just use black bin bags but we do have black and green wheely bins which are emptied on alternate weeks (see here

Re McGrath's song and clothes. I once lost some through putting them in a bin bag. My father mistook it for rubbish and burnt the lot. They were new clothes too that I'd bought for a new job - think it was thier first wash...

I suppose the rationale for the kind of practice Geoff mentions there is that there's a chicken and egg situation involved. Until people can be persuaded to sort out their rubbish, it's not really possible to deal with sorted-out rubbish in an appropriate way; if they can get that to happen it'd be relatively easy to organise arrangements to deal sensibly with the pre-sorted rubbish.
..........................................

What tends to get left on one side is the fact that much/most of the stuff we chuck out shouldn't have been there in the first place - I mean all the extra packing that is such a nuisance to customers in any case.

There should be some way of putting the cost for dealing with this on the people who produce and sell the stuff. If they found it was more profitable to do away with wasteful packaging we'd all be better off.

The "free market" is supposed to sort out that kind of thing, but it doesn't seem to work. As with many of the things it's supposed to sort out.

There's an interesting book in the stores lately about Things Prisoners Make, such as this handy "love doll" made from bin liners.

A conversation last weekend was discussing these household waste sorting schemes. I was told that in Leeds (Yorkshire, England) everything is collected separately, but once it gets to the depot, it all gets dumped into the same skip and dumped in the landfill site. That is- all except the paper, which is mashed up and compressed into large blocks. These are then used to build retaining wals at the landfill site, to keep the rest of the waste contained.
Quack!
GtD.

Black-cabs

As iconic for London as Red Buses (and they aren't always red these days either. Confusing.)

Our local Civic Amenity Site (formerly known as 'the tip') has gone even further in the sorting. They now have several containers (of the lorry variety) lined up with stepladders against them. Each container is for a different variety of rubbish - and heaven help you if you put a plastic bag in with the garden waste! Every container is taken away when full and sent to various recycling depots or mulched down for compost which is then put on the council flower beds. There's even a recycling bin for your bin bags.

Oh. Garbage bags...Yeah they're usually black here in the USA too.
I don't know why I was fixating on grocery bags...which aren't black...

And most taxi cabs were yellow in the USA...I never heard of black taxi cabs...

well maybe jitneys

[and inside joke since in Pittsburgh and maybe other cities 'jitneys' are what you call privately owned cars which serve the same purpose as {taxi} cabs but are illegal...Since alot of cabs won't come to Black neighborhoods, people call 'jitneys'... the passenger sits in the front seat and pays the driver for taking him or her to their destination].

You mean you have to use clear plastic bags for your rubbish, Azizi? That could look a bit yukky... Plus of course there's the matter of privacy.

I suppose it would reduce the risk of chucking out the stuff you hadn't meant to chuck out.

Bin liners aren't quite the same thing, though they might be. I mean there are special plastic bags to use to put in your rubbish bin in the kitchen, so you can lift it out and put it out to be collected. But we tend to use the same all-purpose bags that you can buy in rolls of 10, 50 or whatever. (Which generally are black. If they aren't they still tend to be referred to that way - "We need some more green black plastic bags". Rather like "black taxi-cabs" which these days can come in all colours of the rainbow.)

Leadfingers

I was informed on Monday, by my local borough council (the one with boundaries adjoining your borough council), that compulsory sorting
and recycling of waste will start on 3 July.

We'll have to place food waste and teabags into separate containers from glass, newspapers, cans and plastic bottles. Brown bins (for garden cuttings, cardboard and food waste) will be collected weekly but green recycling boxes and green waste bins will only be collected fortnightly.

I think I'll need to ask the council for another green recycling box, as the one I have is too small to accommodate all the glass and plastic bottles, newspapers and magazines that accumulate in a fortnight.

FYI, in my neck of the woods in the United States, plastic trash bags {as I assume this is the same as 'bin liners'} are usually clear colored. Grocery store chains also have blue plastic bags-and brown paper bags and the blue bags are used for recycling.

But I've never seen any other colors but these.

They do come in different colours, and some councils insist on people using green for garden stuff, red for potentially toxic stuff, and so forth.

The thing to avoid for is to use the same colour bag for the stuff you are putting out and the stuff you are planning to put in the wash, or are in the process of sorting out in a tidy-up frenzy...

Why are they all black? Why can't they make them in pretty colours, like green or brown or red? We could colour code them for recycling purposes.... we already have jolly orange ones for our recyclables, how about using a purple one for the plastics, a yellow one for the nasty stuff like cat litter and nappies, blue one for fabrics and textiles and maybe a nice piggy pink one for food waste.

And what is the first item that goes in the first bag off a new roll?

The paper label holding the roll together.

"Is there trouble all round,
       Is the world running down
Is this poor planet starting to crack?
Well my thought for today is,
       Just put it away
Put it all in that Black Plastic Sack"

When the Rapture comes, it don't make me no never mind what color the bag is or whether the bag is plastic or paper or any other material...Plus, I'm not particular about the color of the bag or whether the stuff is bagged or not, when the Rapture comes, I'm taking all the good stuff I can get a hold of.

Here's one I prepared earlier.

When they speak of the famous inventions
That have changed how we live till we're dead,
Of the cars and the phones and computers,
And the planes flying over our head
And they ask what's the big one that matters?
Is there one that's jumps out of the pack.
When all's said and done
I would nominate one
I give you the Black Plastic Sack.
      Is there trouble all round,
       Is the world running down
Is this poor planet starting to crack?
Well my thought for today is,
       Just put it away
Put it all in that Black Plastic Sack.

Oh my house was a terrible muddle,
With the rubbish piled high all around,
All those things I had thought that I needed,
I knew very soon I'd be drowned.
It was time for a desperate decision,
I knew it was time I should act.
Out of sight out of mind
Is a watchword of mine,
So thank God for the Black Plastic Sack.
    Is there trouble all round...

So into the sack went the rubbish,
And into the sack went the rest,
Into the sack went the shoes and the socks,
And the trousers and sweaters and vests,
And into the sack went the washing,
And the powder that came in a pack,
And into the sack went the washing machine
Oh that wonderful Black Plastic Sack.
    Is there trouble all round...

And into the sack went the bills still unpaid
And those threatening letters in red
Into the sack went the records and tapes
And the books that I never had read,
And into the sack went my cheque book,
And that credit card breaking my back,
It's goodbye and good riddance my flexible friend
You belong in that Black Plastic Sack.
    Is there trouble all round...

They say money's the root of all evil,
All the hatred and greed and the vice
We'd all be far better without it,
I think you should take my advice
So I'll make you a modest proposal
When you leave I'll be there at the back.
Just you throw it away, you'll be free from this day,
Put it there in my Black Plastic Sack.
    Is there trouble all round...

Ah, but 3ft fence panels on 6ft poles can be made to look wonderful by stringing wire along the top and growing ivy, vines, clemetis or honeysuckle along them. Gives you room to talk to your neighbours too.... fences are all too high these days, nowhere to lean and natter.

Posts come in various sizes, it would look quite stupid if you put up a 3ft fence using 6ft posts & just as silly the other way round.
