It IS a bit ridiculous that a pub can have VERY quiet evenings , but if you ask the gaffer if you can run a club in his premises and bring possibly as many as thirty or more extra customers , the Money Grabbing Bastard says -'Sure -Its Fifty Quid an Evening !'
And then complain that the club is using too many glasses , and filling his car park and making the Idle Sod actually WORK for a change !!
And I am NOT exagerating - All situations I have encountered myself !

It's a crap pub ted, I used to play there in the open mic session, the upstairs room was so crowded you couldn't move, downstairs was empty, one feckin person behind the bar so you had to wait ages to get served and over expensive beer.

I don't go any more.

Agreed Villan. Even the mighty Hebden Bridge flamenco club is held in an upstairs room in a pub that would otherwise be empty. The rest of the place is given over to TV screens and bar meals.

Agreed. I have known landlords do well out of folk events but more commonly, something like a folk club or session has been more something for a quiet night of the week or a use for a spare room.

Moving venues with changes of landlords or with other ideas such as wide screen tv is quite familiar...

I agree a lot with what The Villan says on this issue. I run a midweek folk club in the local Cricket Club premises. It's hardly used during the winter and mainly only at weekends during the cricket season. The cricketers are glad to have us there, to bring in a bit of income from the bar and keep the beer turning over. The only difference in that and a pub venue, is that the regular folkies have to help out with setting the chairs and tables out, doing barrel changes, running the bar and making sure that we leave the place as we found it at closing time, whereas, usually, at a pub all that's taken care of by the landlord or his staff. It's not much work and we have the peace of mind that our presence is actually appreciated and that our hosts are not looking for large financial gain from us. SURELY there must be some similar places in Poole? maybe a cricket club, rugby club or other civic venue which is decent and has spare capacity to accommodate you. Even if the venue is 'dry', the regulars can always bring thir own grog and probably get it much cheaper than pubs charge, from the local Tesco or whatever. Anyway, best of luck to Poole F.C, dont go under without a fight!

Why is it there this misconception that folkies churn the money over the counter and make the publican a lot of profit. And why oh why do folkies think that they have a god given right to a room.

On a like to like situation.

If you have a room full of people there purely to drink, they will consume far more drinks.

At a folk evening, say 3 hours, I would think on average 3 maybe 4 drinks would be consumed by each person present. That would equate to one drink per hour.

I think it is pretty clear that singarounds do not attract listeners
and can indeed have an adverse effect on trade.

Don't get me wrong on this one, I think it is smashing to have a folk club in a nice oldie worldy pub, but the best ones IMHO has to have a landlord who likes folk music themselves, and the interest is not purely for profits.

I think club organisers have to keep their feet firmly on the floor and stop thinking that they are gods gift to a publican.

Glad I run my folk club at a Village Hall.

I heard (from Anni Fentiman) at Alcester, last weekend, that the Black Diamond Club in Birmingham moved so many times that the organisers always sorted out another venue in advance.

In Snooker you pot red balls and then coloured balls in sequence.

In Pool(e) you sit in bungalows and read knitting patterns.

Have just heard that the Wednesday night session, 28 June, at the Blue Boar in Poole, Dorset, will be not only the last of the season but the last, period.

The pub having been acquired by Messrs Fuller, Smith & Turner, it's been decided that music nights in the cellar are not sufficiently profitable. It seems therefore that my appearance supporting Derek Burgess on Wednesday will be not only my first opportunity to sing at the club, but also the last!
