I did a search, for what it is worth (not much) and it was Murray McLeod who began the misattribution, although I'm sad to say that I also contributed in innocent ignorance.

Henceforth my contributions will all be consigned to the BS section.

Well, that's laid that ghost! At some point someone (not me, or at least I don't think so!) said Del's guitar was a Tama and said it convincingly enough that everyone believed them! I might do a search for Tama through the Lyrics and Knowledgebase to check, but Tama have got a fair bit of credit for it over the years. Someone will probably find out that Tama and Kasuga guitars were made by the same factory!

All I ever knew for certain was that it is a beautiful instrument, played by one of the best guitarists I have known.

Keep fingering that tree of life, Del!!

Just talking to derek on the phone - he's doing a gig at the Highcliff in Sheffield, October 2nd.

I've been trying to convince him to put his gigs on to mudcat, as its not so easy to get to see him these days, when he's not gigging every single folk club. and us fans need to be kept informed. I don't think he's convinced.

Hello all. My guitar is a KASUGA CONRAD, and an exhibition model at that.It is very rare. Apparently, they only made a few, and they didn't sell very well because they were simply too expensive. Beautifully made it is. I took it round to John Pearse when he was still living in Turnpike Lane, when I first got it, and he told me that it has a Natoh wood neck - a rare, very hard wood that will never warp, and doesn't need any laminations. It had a Brazilian rosewood body, and the mother of pearl inlay is real bits of mother of pearl, not the usual plastic strip. John really drooled over it - and him a Martin afficionado too. So, I hope that's answered the enquiry. I've never heard of a Damion or a Tama before, let alone had one. I did swap my old J45 Gibson for it by the way. Best deal I ever made.

When Del was over in Aus. in 84? I had a Kasuga guitar. Del said that his was a Kasuga too.

I had a Daion before that. Bugger me, I must be losing it.

I'm pretty sure that the guitar is not a Daion but a Tama that was made to celebrate the US BiCentennial (1976) with the great seal of the US inlaid in the back and tree of life on the fingerboard and headstock. It could be that it is a part of the tree of life on the headstock that is being confused with the Daion logo.

If I remember rightly, Del acquired it in the late 70s and exchanged his Gibson (J50?) for it.

In fact, it's the guitar he is playing in the photo on the "Biography page" on the new website. I remember the inlay design on the fingerboard, and you can just make out the "horn" emblem that Daion carved into the headstock.

He used to have a beautiful Daion Guitar with an inlaid mother of pearl eagle on the back.

That was many years ago though. I think he swapped his old Gibson for it.

yes you are correct I was wrong but it does start with a Ta and ends ma so its an easy mistake to make. for me

I've known Del since ever and I'm glad to say I was instrumental in rescuing the text of the first part of his autobiography from an old word processor.

He and Jeannie are great-grandparents, if not great-great-grandparents and need to look after themselves. I might be tempted to offer my services as roadie again - haven't done that since 1971 or thereabouts. I'll certainly offer him a lift to the Alex Atterson Memorial Weekend in October.

Can you have a folksinger listed, as in Grade I? If you could, Del would be a candidate. After all "There's no-one as old as Derek Brimstone!"

Thanks for that - I've only seen him a couple of times. He is a great performer, I don't know how I missed him in the late sixties early seventies. Still better late than never!

yeh talked to him last night on the phone. he wants to keep his hand in (as the gynaecologist said, etc...) doing a gig a month or so. but he's been in hospital a couple of times since I saw him last(must be six months ago). And he's waiting for a machine to help him from the NHS. he find the travelling hard going - the drive home etc.

there is another album planned and he hopes to keep going via his website.

Anyway, now you've got his contact details from the site, you'll all be able to keep in touch and wish him well. I know he would like to hear from all his fans, because I get the impression, its been a tough wicket - healthwise. he was telling me now that he doesn't feel up to all the really strenuous gigging schedules, he would like to find another creative outlet.

del was probably my biggest single influence - through trying to be like him, I found out about what I was capable of myself, as an artist. I know he has been an influence and inspiration to lots of us. He is upset about any gigs he has had to cancel. I am sure you will all realise Derek is very professional in his attitude, and would only let a venue down with the greatest reluctance.

Does anybody know how Derek Brimstone is? The lat couple of engagements at The Orpington Folk Club were cancelled at short notice due to health problems. I hope the old geezer is alright!
