Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,Chalkie Date: 28 Feb 07 - 07:32 AM All the above info'is great - I've even ordered a three CD's and a book from the Fogarty's Cove web site - but can anyone just simply post the chords for Lock Keeper? None of the leads that I have taken from the submissions above have proved fruitful. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Phil Cooper Date: 26 Feb 07 - 04:30 PM If you can only get one Stan album, get "Live, Between the Breaks." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Feb 07 - 09:01 PM Gerry- I believe Between The Breaks was the live recording which had the "Witch of the Westmereland" on it that I mentioned above. It's certainly one of my favorites and does capture the spirit of the gang in performance. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 25 Feb 07 - 07:20 PM Funny, no one has mentioned Between The Breaks, my favorite Stan Rogers album. It has Mary Ellen Carter, Barrett's Privateers, White Collar Holler & a few other nice ones. Bok, Muir and Trickett do a good version of Lock Keeper. I think it's on the album, And So Will We Yet. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: CharleyO'Neill Date: 24 Feb 07 - 08:02 PM Never heard Stan myself. Mate of mine went to USA and found a great fondness for Stan amongst American folkies. ' The Mary Ellen Carter' is a great song which I think may be one of Stan's. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Scrump Date: 24 Feb 07 - 10:32 AM Thanks for the advice on Stan's recordings, folks. I'll have to get one or two to listen to. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,meself Date: 24 Feb 07 - 09:54 AM I put in my vote for Fogarty's Cove as well. I also liked For the Family very much, and, although I haven't heard Home in Halifax in its entirety, the cuts I have heard lead me to suspect that I would rank it among the best. Some of the others are a little "too much" for me, but that's a matter of taste; obviously many people are enthused about all of them, end to end. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Feb 07 - 09:42 AM Scrump- I'd start with Fogarty's Cove, but know that once you're hooked you're doomed to want them all! Life could be worse! I do admit, though, that sometimes Stan Rogers crosses the line into sentimental claptrap. Just where that line is depends on your personal tolerance for such stuff. I still remember the first time I heard the band cover Archie Fisher's "Witch of the Westmereland." What a gorgeous song, and what a splendid rendition! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Feb 07 - 03:49 AM I remember seeing Archie Fisher on tv years ago singing Stan's " Make and Break Harbour". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: CharleyO'Neill Date: 23 Feb 07 - 09:07 PM Nice song, havent heard it for years. I remember Marilyn Middleton Pollock did a nice version. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: JedMarum Date: 23 Feb 07 - 03:21 PM I love this song. It may be my very favorite Stan Rogers song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 23 Feb 07 - 12:10 PM Flossie Malavialle does a great version too. And I've been known to murder it too, on occasion. :-) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Raggytash Date: 23 Feb 07 - 09:53 AM For a version of Lock Keeper the best I've ever hears was by Marilyn Middleton-Pollock absolutely superb rendition |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Ref Date: 23 Feb 07 - 09:44 AM "Home In Halifax" is your best bet. It has a great selection of songs and the concert patter, which is wonderful. I agree with Rapaire that you'll soon want, if not have, them all! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Scrump Date: 23 Feb 07 - 09:35 AM Thanks Rapaire. Is there a kind of 'greatest hits' compilation? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Rapparee Date: 23 Feb 07 - 09:32 AM I'd suggest "Northwest Passage" and "Home in Halifax" for starters. But you'll own all of them soon enough! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: Scrump Date: 23 Feb 07 - 08:51 AM As an aside from this thread: I've heard a few Stan Rogers songs by other people, and was impressed with the songs, bu he's one of those artists I've been hoping to catch up with but I'm ashamed to say I've not got around to yet. Can anyone recommend what the best CD is, for someone like me to get into his songs? Is there a compilation of some of his best stuff that you would recommend as a starting point? Any recommendations gratefully received. |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: The Lock-Keeper (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,Chalkie Date: 23 Feb 07 - 08:16 AM Having recently just about got the hang of strumming a number of songs with a guitar, I want to try picking a few and have always loved this song and there is no better way than to learn on a song that you want to learn - if you see what I mean - does anyone have the chords? I've tried the blue clicky thing on Joe Offers submission above but it doesn't seem to work. Are you there Joe, or Pete or anyone else who can help? Cheers |
Subject: RE: Lock keeper From: Pete Date: 26 Feb 99 - 02:38 PM Thanks Joe. It was good to have the chords also. I play in the open tuning suggested and found the format the song was presented in really useful. I would have spent ages working it out myself. Thanks again Pete |
Subject: RE: Lock keeper From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 24 Feb 99 - 06:39 PM Stan Rogers did write it. It's on From Fresh Water. |
Subject: RE: Lock keeper From: Sandy Paton Date: 23 Feb 99 - 08:18 PM Yes, Bok, Muir, and Trickett recorded it on their And So Will We Yet compact disc, with Ed Trickett singing the lead. That's Folk-Legacy CD-116. Now I'll post this and see if the link works! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Lock keeper From: Teresa Date: 23 Feb 99 - 04:37 PM Oh, yes, if it isn't my favorite song of all time, it's pretty darn close. Eric Bogle also recorded it. ... I'll try to find out which recording it's on. Teresa |
Subject: RE: Lock keeper From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Feb 99 - 04:27 PM Great song, isn't it? - Click here. I understand from the Stan Rogers site and from the CD notes that the song was written by Rogers. I think Bok-Muir-Trickett recorded it, too. -Joe Offer- Link updated Jun 23 '02 to reflect new address. --JoeClone |
Subject: Lock keeper From: Pete Date: 23 Feb 99 - 03:12 PM Any one know words to a song called 'Lock keeper'?? Bill Craig recorded it as did Stan Rodgers. |
