Hi Severn -- sorry to be a little late checking in from the much-maligned Columbus ( hmmmm-- football? is that the one with pointy ends??) Off the top of my head you could drop by the Areopagetica Book Store Saturday evening for a free folky concert and meet several members of the Columbus Folk Music Society (or try www.cfms-inc.org). Or hit me at fred@fredbaileymusic.com and I'll see if I can hustle up some more dates on such short notice -- something I've not had a lot of practice at in recent years.

Been offline messing things up tryiong to wi-fi......I'm an idiot.

As to Columbus..............

I grew up in the suburbs and now live about 45 miles out of town. Columbus is not and has never been much of a folk town except for a brief period back in the late 60's and early 70's. There is an active bunch of blues and jazz stuff and of course C-W plus some excellent classical groups, but not much on the acoustic scene. There are some decent Irish bars but this presents you with a bit of a problem.

Here's the problem. Its called Ohio State football. Columbus is the biggest college town in the country. While there are several colleges here and it is a pretty fair sized city, a lot of the goings on around town this time of year are controlled/dominated by OSU football. OSU in fact has a major influence on this city at anytime, its just that football season is THE WORST! OSU has 50,000 students on the main campus which covers almost 1800 acres plus the AG center and has over 450 buildings located on it.

On weekends during season it is a zoo. Most of the better places are located around campus or in areas of town where the sports bars rule. This week is a home game against Cincy and while that is not a serious rivalry, it will be nutso up there.

Here's a very decent website (CLANK ON HERE) that I tend to agree with as far as selections, but wherever you go you may well wind up with OSU fans (read:idiots).

Where is your daughter in school? I might have an idea or two as far as something close to her.

Sorry I can't be more help. We're going to be gone this weekend ourselves or I'd offer to get together, but maybe we can do that on another trip. Let me know.

Spaw

Hi, Severn - I guess you'll have to contact Spaw (click) directly. He lives not far away. To tell the truth, though, there's not much music around Columbus - but there's enough roadkill for a tasty dinner, or you can go to Dayton and see the Air Force Museum.
Good luck.

I am going out to Columbus, Ohio to visit my daughter in college there this coming weekend. Are there any Catters thereabouts with knowledge of the music scene, if any, there or can tell me of any good restaurants or other recommended places to go. She's only been out there a couple of weeks, so I don't expect her to know the town or the scene yet. Thanks in advance.

Severn
