This thread was about whether or not I can get a club/folk event to give us a bulk discount if i can bring half a dozen or more studens people along to an event (have minibus can travel. I made it as broad as possible so i can use any information for the freshers fayre on thursday.

it wasn't about whether students should or shouldnt get discounts or what the basic requirements were for unwaged, if you want to debate IMHO you should start your own thread and put it in BS.

We have, last year, taken 20 to 30 people to ceilidhs in an evening in the local area, some of whom have never been to a folk club. I am just trying to encourage people to take a wider interest in what the folk scene has to offer.

I'm in the jolly situation where, if I stopped work and booted Manitas out, I'd be nearly £300 a month better off on benefits than I am now with a part time job and a husband. I don't get discounts for anything, even though my personal income is relatively low.

Most places will ask for proof of receipt of benefit - a signing on card, student ID that sort of thing... but it seems that the low waged are lumped in with the £13,000 a week footballers when it comes to tickets.

The choir I attend practices in University buildings and we have a discount system for students/unwaged for our subscriptions. But that's where the discounts end. Everyone has to pay the same amount for hire/purchase of music. We're a registered charity and barely manage to stay solvent.

And I agree... when you see students driving flashy new cars, wearing designer gear and spending a fortune in the student bar, it sort of makes you wonder why you should discount at all.

(Yes, I know not all students are like that, there are some who ride 20yr old bicycles and wear Oxfam reject clothing but I don't see many of them around UEL of a Tuesday night).

Most every UK pub (even the Bells) is happy to host a young tart on their menu. From my experience. The Greeks prefer Russian. The Afgans prefer Irish. The Paki/Indi prefer Scotch.

of signing on for benefir..

which is a bit of a bastard if you're one of the poor sods denied benefit
and intimidated into signing off
to save money and fiddle the unemployment staistics..

Having had experience of a student who could afford clothes and accessories by the likes of Gucci and Armani ( OK, he worked part time for the dosh), I'd say pay yer whack!

I am involved with a ceilidh Society at Warwick University and we are looking for group events as additional things to do, we have organised trips to IVDF but do you as an Folk organiser (or know some one who does) who offer discounts for students to go to clubs festivals, concerts?
