Subject: RE: lyrics of 'don't sit under the apple tree' From: Sandy Paton Date: 12 Mar 99 - 08:30 PM When I heard it, during WWII, it was gender modified: I just got word from a guy who heard from the guy next door to me, A girl he met just loved to pet, and she fits you to a T. I thought even the Andrews Sisters sang it with these words. However, it was a long time ago... Sandy |

Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T SIT UNDER THE APPLE TREE From: MMario Date: 12 Mar 99 - 09:05 AM from the Andrews Sisters lyrics site.... DON'T SIT UNDER THE APPLE TREE (WITH ANYONE ELSE BUT ME) by Lew Brown, Charlie Tobias and Sam H. Stept. ©1942 As sung by the Andrews Sisters INTRO: I wrote my mother. I wrote my father. And now I'm writing you too. I'm sure of mother. I'm sure of father. And now I want to be sure (very, very sure) of you. Don't sit under the apple tree With anyone else but me Anyone else but me Anyone else but me NO! NO! NO! Don't sit under the apple tree With anyone else but me Till I come marching home. Don't go walking down lover's lane With anyone else but me Anyone else but me Anyone else but me NO! NO! NO! Don't go walking down lover's lane With anyone else but me Till I come marching home. I just got word from a guy who heard from the guy next door to me. The girl he met just loves to pet And it fits you to a tee. So. don't sit under the apple tree With anyone else but me Till I come marching home. Don't sit under the apple tree With anyone else but me (with anyone else but her) no, no, no, not a single soul but me NO! NO! NO! Don't you sit under the apple tree With anyone else but me Not till you see me, not until you see me marching home. home, home, home sweet home Don't go walking down lover's lane With anyone else but me (with anyone else but her) no, no, no, not a single soul but me NO! NO! NO! Don't you go walking down lover's lane With anyone else but me Not till you see me, not until you see me marching home. home home home home sweet home |

"Don't go holding up the local bank"
"Don't go eating any Grondhog stew"
"Don't go buying any new condoms" etc. catspaw |

Subject: RE: lyrics of 'don't sit under the apple tree' From: catspaw49 Date: 12 Mar 99 - 08:01 AM Actually Steve, I'd skip the original "Sabre Dance" and opt for the Spike Jones version instead. And thanks for the right names...but are you sure one of them wasn't named Zippy? **grin** catspaw |

Subject: RE: lyrics of 'don't sit under the apple tree' From: Steve Parkes Date: 12 Mar 99 - 07:52 AM Laverne, Maxene and Patti Andrews (aka the Andrews Sisters) did record it, but I'm not sure theirs was the original version. (Mind you, if it's "original" you want, you should hear their "Sabre* Dance", accompanied by the Harmonica Gentlemen!) It sounds like it's based on a trad song, unless I'm thinking of "Underneath the spreading chestnut tree" or something. Steve

Subject: RE: lyrics of 'don't sit under the apple tree' From: catspaw49 Date: 12 Mar 99 - 07:27 AM I believe it was the Andrew's Sisters and I recall only a bit more. The first line basically repeats:
Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me. Second verse I think is "Don't go walkin' down lover's lane with anyone else but me" Sorry...that's my limit, except recalling how homely the Andrew's Sisters were. Names? LaVerne? Maxine for sure! Dorothy? Shirley? Zippy? catspaw |

Subject: RE: lyrics of 'don't sit under the apple tree' From: Ferrara Date: 12 Mar 99 - 07:03 AM I only remember one more line: "Til we go marching, marching home." From WWI I believe. My mom sang it. She said her father would invite servicemen to their home for dinner. After dinner, they sang songs around the piano. I'm pretty sure she said they sang this one a lot on those evenings. |
