Martin Fierro is local to my area (San Francisco Bay Area). I've seen him with Zero a bunch of times. In addition to being a fine sax player, he's also a total goofball! For some years it was his habit to loudly tell fans to "Shut up!" during shows. Most recently I saw him at a Zero reunion show last year.

Cheers,
Michael

I knew of this amazing musician's work with Mother Earth, but I am just beginning to learn about his history. He played with just about everybody and every musical genre involving a saxophone over the past half-century. Fierro backed up Chuck Berry and Little Richard as a teenager, and later played jazz with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis.

From the website for the Legion of Mary:

"Martín Fierro played tenor saxophone, flute and percussion with the original Legion Of Mary. It's Martín's alto and tenor sax that you hear on the Grateful Dead's Wake of the Flood album. For the last 15 years, Martín's main gig has been with Zero, the quintessential Northern California jam band.

Martín has been associated with bands ranging from the Sir Douglas Quintet, Mother Earth, Howard Wales, James Cotton, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Loudon Wainright III, Queen Ida, Jazz is Dead, David Grisman, Derek Trucks, Don Johnson, Shades of Joy, Aunt Monk, Steve Kimock & Friends and many more.

Fierro regularly hosts jazz excursions in the Martín Fierro Quartet , and still plays the rare Zero show. One of the true saxophone greats, this man has been around forever and played with just about anyone you could name."

Any other fans out there? Does anyone have more information or firsthand experiences hearing live performances of Martin Fierro?

Elmer
