"A musical "tripe" across Ireland" more like.

"A musical trip across Ireland" - literally. They went in a straight line west from Dublin and back again. Handy for their plane journey, I suppose. The other provinces didn't get a look-in.

The late President Allende is mentioned in a Christy Moore song. That doesn't make him traditional either!

Jayz, Mary Black is about as much a traditional singer as Val Doonican!

not much love and affection there, by the sound of it.....

What has Mary Black to do with traditional music.....?

She's mentioned in Christy moore song. can't get more traditional than that.

The Radio 4 webpage describes it as 'a musical trip across Ireland'. There doesn't seem to be any commitment to restrict themselves to traditional music, and why should they?

I had the misfortune to listen to this show following your recommendation. It is the pits, though probably admirably suited to Radio 4's afternoon listening audience.

It's riddled with errors and mispronunciations and plays so safe that it should have had Elastoplast as a sponsor. It is not to be recommended.

And what the flying feck does Mary Black have to do with traditional music?

After the excellent programme on music in the Highlands there is a programme called "Joan's Journey" being broadcast on Radio Four in the same time slot - 3.45 p.m. each day for a week. (The "Joan" is Joan Armatrading who I first saw in a touring production of "Hair" around 1970/71...but I digress).

Kilfenora Ceilidh Band and an Irish Piper have appeared as has Mary Black, so it has covered some traditional music.

Worth a listen - or in this case a "Listen Again" via the BBC website/Radio Four/Listen Again.
