Subject: RE: Folklore: The Mari Lwyd on tour in Wales From: sian, west wales Date: 05 Dec 06 - 06:43 AM Yeh, apparently the pibgorn makers are also relying on the USA to source horns, which they can't get over here any more. How sad is that?! So, are the Mari's going to challenge each other? Verses at 100 paces? sian |

Subject: RE: Folklore: The Mari Lwyd on tour in Wales From: Splott Man Date: 05 Dec 06 - 06:19 AM Mari doesn't care about Health & Safety. I know a student in Pontypridd who wanted to make a Mari for a film project. He could find one here, but bought one on eBay from the States! I think our Mari is going to meet the Cardiff one (and maybe others) at an event in Cardiff next week. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: The Mari Lwyd on tour in Wales From: sian, west wales Date: 05 Dec 06 - 04:34 AM The Mari seems to be undertaking an intensive breeding programme in Wales too. (No wonder she needs a holiday!) Sleeping Giant Foundation and Menter Brycheiniog in the Brecons have started and are stock piling skulls for future use. Apparently some Health and Safety Regs mean it's going to be next to impossible to get skulls in the future. They've also had one made of fibre glass with lights and buzzers - very techno! Then there's the one that's been going a couple of years in Dinas Mawddwy, and the Cardiff one (if I'm allowed to mention that one in the same breath as Llantrisant?) I hear that the 2 Rivers Festival run an event where the Welsh Mari meets the English Wassail on the bridge that spans the border. We're running Mari workshops in 4 Carmarthenshire schools this month. And I imagine there are a few that I don't know about. Good to see an old tradition re-claiming its turf! sian |

Subject: RE: Folklore: The Mari Lwyd on tour in Wales From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 04 Dec 06 - 06:24 PM I first heard of this through Mick Tems's informative and entertaining postings on uk.music.folk. Then a few years ago I read there that he had had a very bad stroke, and haven't heard anything about him since - he's posted nothing. How is he? |
