Well, as expected, Tanglefoot warmed up a subzero Maine winter evening yesterday with their robust singing and playing. There was a nice crowd there to greet them and the organizers should be very pleased with the evening.

They plunged right in with "Dollar Bill," their song about an eccentric tavern owner during the all too dry days of prohibition, and they never stopped generating energy!

It was only a year ago that Sandra Swannell joined the group, and her voice and fiddle have adapted well while adding a "spark" to the group; their new CD is appropriately titled DANCE LIKE FLAMES. I also loved Sandra's song "Maggie" about an intrepid woman who over a period of twenty years constructed a massive stone bridge, coaching the glacial boulders down the hillsides to "their new home," fitting them together like puzzle pieces into her bridge.

I was also delighted that the rest of the band had joined in singing Terry Young's "Lunenburg Skies," a song which commemorates his first experience with the glorious Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival in Nova Scotia. I had heard it at the Festival a year or so ago, fell in love with it, and purchased Terry's personal CD then. The chorus runs:

And the Lunenburg skies were warm and alive
And a melody danced on the breeze
As the notes poured down all over the town
We joined in the sweet harmony.

Then there was Al Parish's anthem called "Hard Work," brilliantly rendered by the gang:

From everywhere around the world
We come here to build this land
We've done the hard work through the years
With our strong backs and our skilled hands.

And there was the song commemorates that moment in the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes when Commodore Chauncy permited a smaller British warship and her consort to pass because they are conveying the personal possessions of the respected British General Brock back to his homeland.

Some of the new songs I'll have to hear many more times before I can fully appreciate them but it's a task I look forward to.

If Tanglefoot is playing within 3 hours of where you're living this weekend, don't miss them. This evening, Saturday, they're at the Middle Earth Music Hall in Bradford, Vermont. Sunday, they're at the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sinsul-

The energy generated from Tanglefoot will propel you and your friends through the rest of the weekend. To hell with cleaning up your house! Tell Jacqui and Trubrit that Artisan speaks highly of Tanglefoot.

Sigh, one of my favorite groups and here I am in Guam... If you can get there, do it. If you can't, start crying now.

Definite maybe. I am having a houseful of people on Saturday and may be confined to the kitchen on Friday.

Well, I'm planning to go - but I think you already knew that.

Seriously - if you're anywhere near the area - they are absolutely one of the best groups I've ever heard. Hope to see you there!

Sandra is a great fiddle player and a lovely woman to boot. She adds a different element to the line up but without taking anything away from it. Can you tell I'm a fan?

Here's some more bio-details about band members including the new fiddler:

Sandra Swannell made her Tanglefoot debut in January 2006. She succeeded Terry Snider, who joined in May of 2003 upon the retirement of founding fiddler Joe Grant. Guitarist Steve Ritchie has the longest tenure, having played with Tanglefoot since 1988. Toronto bass player Al Parrish has been around since 1994. Terry Young joined in 1999, bringing with him a gaggle of instruments including mandolin, guitar, tenor and five-sting banjo, harmonica and whistle. Piano player Bryan Weirmier replaced Tanglefoot's original keyboardist, Rob Ritchie, in the summer of 2002.

And info on their new CD:

Released in the fall of 2006, Dance Like Flames is Tanglefoot's first studio album since 2002. It's the first Tanglefoot CD to contain songs by all of the current band members. It also includes a first for Tanglefoot, a female voice.

Yes, this is "full-throated" promotion but I'm doing it as a volunteer, and I actually pay for concert tickets.

I do hope someone else in Maine is planning to go...

My wife actually holds the title of "having heard their current line up first". The last "Tanglefoot" with my old friend Terry Snider were auditioning the new "female" fiddler on the night of their appearance at the "Brampton Folk Club" (that's Brampton in Ontario Canada) Friday night concert series, when my wife took them some water in mid audition. So she heard them when they selected "her".
Fourteen minuted of fame left to go.
I have heard them since and although I have a bias towards Terry Snider, She ain't bad for sure and they still have the magic.
A BAND NOT TO BE MISSED.
JohnB.

Here's a link to Tanglefoot's webpage: Click here for website

They were just breaking in their new female fiddler/vocalist last time I heard them and she appears from the website to have been a keeper, and featured on their new CD.

I'm curious whether there will be much of a turnout from the college students, given that the concert is taking place on an ivy league campus. Any bets?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I ran across a poster announcing this concert the other day. This Ontario-based folk group has got to be one of my favorites. You get impeccable musicianship, driving original traditional style songs, humor and tears, great harmony, and patter.

Tanglefoot will be presented by Ceildh House at the Kresge Auditorium Visual Arts Building at Bowdoin College, Brunswich, Maine, on Friday, January 26, 7:30 pm, admission $18.

Reservations and more information at 207-729-3185.
