Well put bubblyrat. This was the real business, a good old-fashioned bit of of BBC radio, informiative, fun, not dumbed-down, enthusiastic and not sneering. Great stuff. I wish they used that approach more.

Excellent programme. I think it was inr=teresting to get the classic banjo emphasis, as we get more exposure to the bluegrass and oldtime. Pity he didnt have time for the modern Barney McKenna(and followers) tenor plectrum style, but you can't cover everything in half an hour. Great to hear a nice slice of Johhny St Cyr, who powered some of the most influential recordings of the 20th century. And I was delighted they finished with Whistling Rufus, one of the world's great tunes . A joy.

An excellent programme, maybe with a little too much emphasis on classic banjo for my taste, though I believe that's Julian Vincent's bag. Great to hear Cyril Wickam talking about minstrel banjo - Cyril's a great guy who's very knowledgeable about such stuff. Also great to hear some old time banjo from Kate Lissauer, the American landlady of the Green Park Tavern in bath who's also the fiddle player and square dance caller for the Buffalo Gals.
This one's a keeper when I've recorded it off the net.

Ray

This programme is on B.B.C. Radio 4 today at 1:30 P.M. (GMT)
Radio 4 is at 92.4-94.6 MHz. Blurb reads "Julian Vincent reveals the beauty & virtuosity of playing the Banjo."
A step in the right direction?
