There is also a vacuum cleaning device for cleaning the grooves of vinyls. They are fairly expensive; but some record shops have them and will clean a record for a fee. (A friend of mine just popped US$1000 and bought one. He is very happy with it.

If mechanical cleaning like Mountain Thyme suggest or with a vacuum cleaner work, I think the results will be much better than you will get from filtering which has to filter out some of the good stuff too.

No high tech is needed! I transfer from 78rpm and cylinders to analog often with great results. First thing is finding the original key. Then coat (damp using a small sponge or powder-puff) the 78 with a mild solution of dish detergent. Play the 78 at any rpm even 45rpm while you record it on to tape. Then with a pitch adjustable machine, Sony, JVC, Marantz, etc. change back to the original key and dub away. You can play around with the various Dolby filters but the dish detergent does the trick and the pitch is perfect enough for practice of fiddle tunes.

I haven't been able to find any software that allows you to record old vinyl songs and remove the worst of the pops and noises before saving it to tape. I read about affordable software a number of years ago - probably DOS - but cannot now track it down. Any help appreciated.

John
