Well, it was a super night, with lots of laughter and almost some tears - actually, there were tears but those *were* of laughter. And we had a couple of holidaymakers drop in, though whether that was due to this thread, we didn't get a chance to find out, as they had to leave before the end of the evening - but one of them gave us a good strong rendition of 'Pick a Bale of Cotton'. (And no, I don't want to go into the political correctness of that particular song again!)

Anyway, the next one is on Saturday 14th April, so if you're around N. Devon/West Somerset for Easter week, you might still be around by then - we'd love to welcome you. There's even a buffet supper available before the Session - PM me for more details.

I wouldn't, but it might intrigue someone sufficiently to persuade them to look at the thread, and I did explain in my very first post exactly where it was. And I would hardly be inviting people through Mudcat if it was just for locals.

What is your problem, Eric?

Why would expect someone from hundreds of miles away to know the local name of your village ? or is it a local pub for local people like Royston Vasey.

Bless you, Burl!

Eric, there may be an Irish connection. Shammick is the local name for the village of Combe Martin, but why that should be so remains open to conjecture. Back in the 13th Century and later, Irish people came over to work in the silver mines here, and that may be how the name came into being in the local area.

And Irish music is as welcome at Shammick Acoustic as any other kind - just to get back to the thread!

Anyone who is able to should get themselves to the Shammick Acoustic. I've been there and I know. It's great. There should be more like it. But then, there should be more like Tom & Barbara, who run it. Busy professional singers, but not too busy to put something back into the folk scene.

If anyone's foolish enough to be having a holiday in the West Country, and can't find anything to do this coming Saturday night, there'll be a warm (and dry!) welcome for you in the Stable Bar of the Top George Inn, Victoria Street, Combe Martin, N. Devon.

There's nothing stuck in the mud about the Shammick Acoustic Sessions. It's an Open Night in singaround format, but anything goes - songs, music, tales, poems or even jokes - lots of good chorus singing and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

We pass the pot round for contributions of around the price of a pint, and that goes towards some visiting performers and to subsidise workshops.

It's always good to have visitors, so if you are around, do drop in.

Barbara
