from The Farhang Foundation, an Iranian cultural organisation based in California USA:

Farhang Foundation mourns the passing of the legendary Iranian singer Aref, whose voice defined an era and whose music continues to resonate across generations.

Aref was more than an artist, he was a cultural icon whose career helped shape the golden age of Iranian pop music. Emerging in the 1960s, he was among the pioneering voices who introduced a new wave of modern Iranian music, blending Western-influenced rock and popular styles with deeply poetic Persian lyricism, helping redefine the sound of a generation.

Throughout his remarkable career, he collaborated with many of the most legendary musicians, composers, and lyricists of his time, bridging popular music with more sophisticated orchestral traditions, including notable collaborations with composers such as Ahmad Pejman. His artistry moved seamlessly between intimate romantic ballads and grand, orchestrated works, expanding the possibilities of Iranian music.

Among his most iconic works is Soltan-e Ghalbha (Sultan of Hearts), a timeless anthem that became synonymous with love and longing, and remains one of the most cherished songs in Iranian music history. His body of work spans hundreds of songs, by some accounts numbering in the hundreds across a career of more than six decades, each carrying his unmistakable emotional depth and signature voice.

Aref also held a lasting presence in Iranian cinema. He lent his voice to dozens of film soundtracks, with many of his songs becoming inseparable from the films themselves, and he appeared on screen as an actor in six films, further cementing his place in the cultural life of his time.

For decades, Aref’s voice brought joy, nostalgia, and a profound sense of connection to audiences across the globe. His music has accompanied generations through moments of celebration, heartbreak, and reflection, ensuring his place as one of the defining figures of Iranian music history.

As we remember his extraordinary legacy, we honor not only the artistry he shared with the world, but also the enduring emotional bond he created with millions of listeners.

Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all those who were touched by his music.

May his voice echo on, forever.
