Subject: Review: Fianna - go and see them From: Peterr Date: 30 Oct 03 - 09:34 AM I thought I would probably not be that impressed by this band. Three Hungarians and three English (one being Luke Daniels) would be neither one thing nor the other. They aren't - they are brilliant musicians whose carefully put together sets reflect Eastern European and the more familiar (to us) Irish and some Scottish. I've never seen fiddling like it, nor button accordeon, nor bass (ever seen a reel played on a string bass?) and Alan Burton's Uillyean piping was a revelation. Why aren't they better known, in spite of Daniels being with them? I don't know, they deserve to be right up there, but due to financial constraints their present tour may be their last. Over the next month they will be in Cornwall, Leicestershire, Ireland, Southampton, Oxford, Hammersmith, Bath, Alnwick, Grimsby, Matlock Bath and Hebden Bridge. PM me if you want details. If you enjoy instrumental bands, or even think you might, go and see them. |
