Some of the less strident temperance songs have beautiful melodies and tons of pathos. They work really well with the right accompaniment and if you leave out the verses that sound too comical today (demon rum etc). I often sing "Where is my wandering boy tonight" and "Throw out the lifeline".
Throw out the lifeline across the dark wave There is a seaman who someone may save Somebody's brother oh who then will dare To throw out the lifeline his peril to share?
Throw out the lifeline, throw out the lifeline Someone is drifting away Throw out the lifeline, throw out the lifeline Someone is drifting today
