He has been a doctor, the Chief of the LA Police Department, a senator, a Vice President, and for a brief moment he was the commander of the Starship Enterprise. He is also an outstanding musician, and probably this will be the first time that the Hurdy Gurdy has presented a performer who not only is promoting a CD - but also a new movie with Eddie Murphy.

On Saturday April 5 at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club is proud to present renowed actor, singer, songwriter and storyteller RONNY COX   at the Fair Lawn Community Center in Fair Lawn, NJ. Tickets can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office on the night of the concert.

Yes, it is that Ronny Cox, the actor that you remember from "Bound for Glory", "Robo Cop", "Beverly Hills Cop", "The Onion Field", "Stargate SG-1" and dozens of films and television programs. Ronny began his career as a musician. He performed in folk clubs in the early 1960's, before his big acting break came in the 1972 film "Deliverance".   Remember the famous "Dueling Banjo's" scene?   That was Ronny Cox playing the guitar with the banjo-playing mountain boy.    After the film established Ronny as a actor, he would continue to write songs and perform on occasion, and in recent years he has begun pursuing music on an equal basis with his work in film and television.

Ronny is a first-rate songwriter/entertainer, by turns insightful, hilarious, and engaging. Ronny's easy style is perfectly showcased in his performance The Boston Globe described him as "...a study in easygoing amiability and unforced charisma. He charms crowds with self-teasing humor, tart progressive insight, and a lulling Southwestern folk sound."

At the Hurdy Gurdy, Ronny will present a progam that he calls "Songs, Stories and Out & Out Lies". With a small, dazzling array of multi-instrumentalists (many of his band members have toured with Jack Williams), the music is eclectic... funny.. touching and always compelling. They showcase an original, sophisticated lyric-driven folky sound... and the stories that accompany these songs are something else entirely.

Have you ever wondered how a story of "questionable veracity" gets started? Well... some small grain of truth gets twisted and turned and then told and retold. Eventually that small grain has grown ito a boulder of "undeniable truth" that you would bet your house on! Well ok... maybe not your house, but someone's house.

Joining Ronny will be our special guests - The Dirty Stay Out Skifflers.   Their blend of old-time jug band songs, blues, country and folk tunes will get the evening off to a rousing start! The Dirty Stay Out Skifflers feature Dan Berger on harmonica, Rick Nestler (who wrote the song "River that Flows Both Ways", recorded by Pete Seeger) on 12 string guitar and vocals and Donna Nestler on banjolele, washboard, kazoo and vocals.

Tickets for this concert are only $25 ($22 for Hurdy Gurdy members) and can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair Lawn Community Center on the night of the concert. While we expect to have tickets available the night of the concert, we encourage online ticket orders to insure your seat at our show!

I caught this show at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley a few years ago.

Make time to see this show. Ronny Cox is a warm, talented, entertaining guy who brings a great band with him.

I'm a great fan of Ronny, but he was ' acting 'in the fim Deliverance, Eric Weissberg played banjo and Steve Mandell played guitar. Ronny sang and played later in the film, pretty good too.

Ronny Cox was playing the guitar in the film, but as you note - the soundtrack featured Steve Mandell.   Make no mistake, regardless of who was playing on the soundtrack, Ronny is more than competent on the instrument - he is not just "acting". He is the real deal.

The boy playing the banjo did not know how to play the instrument, and there was actually another boy reaching around to play the chords. Great editing and shot blocking!

Ronny's next "big" acting job was on a television show called Apples Way. The show would always end with Ronny's character playing the guitar.

Well damn......Sorry I missed this before as I'm a fan and as a matter of fact I watched "Deliverance" just yesterday! That was his first big break as well as it was for Ned Beatty.

btw.......Bill McKinney who played the sodomist cracker was a well trained actor starting out as a classmate of Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman at the Pasadena Playhouse and later went on to be accepted and study at the Actor's Studio in NYC. You see him all over, a great character actor, but I was really amazed to find out his background. You might also enjoy theis info on Billy Redden, the Banjo Boy.
