Johnny B on another thread was searching for the lyrics to this song. Rick Fielding says Jim Reeves did it in the '60's. Obviously Rick did participate in the '60's. If you really participated in the '60's you can't remember it.

Any help for Johnny B.? I'm going to link him to this thread.

Wolfgang,

How do you find all of these sites? You are truly Germany's answer to Joe Offer!

I was a semi-participant in the sixties. Actually the song was too sucky for me, but I had a rare opportunity to put "Johnny B and Good" together.

I installed Real Audio last week for the first time and got somewhat disappointing results, but could not resist having a quick listen to a download (I think) of this song. Late 50's as I recall. Sticky and sentimental, but I enjoyed it nevertheless - reminds me of an Orbison song, but can't recall the title.

John

Was it not Orbison? His name comes into my head when I hear the title.

Martin, if you check out Wolgang's link above you'll see that you are right on both counts. The Big O song I was thinking of was 'There Won't Be Many Coming Home'.

John

Subject: Lyr Add: DISTANT DRUMS (Cindy Walker)
From: Jim Dixon

Lyrics copied from International Lyrics Playground:

DISTANT DRUMS
Cindy Walker

I hear the sound of distant drums
Far away, far away;
And if they call for me to come,
Then I must go, and you must stay.

So, Mary, marry me. let's not wait.
Let's share all the time we can before it's too late.
Love me now, for now is all the time there may be.
If you love me, Mary, Mary, marry me.

I hear the sound of bugles blow'
Far away, far away;
And if they call, then I must go
Across the sea, so wild and grey.

So, Mary, marry me. let's not wait,
Or the distant drums might change our wedding day.
And love me now, for now is all the time there may be.
If you love me, Mary, Mary, marry me.

[Recorded by Foster & Allen, Dominick Maita, Daniel O'Donnell, Roy Orbison, Charley Pride, Jim Reeves, Tommy Scott, Gene Vincent, and several others.]

Jim Reeves' version of this song was the most successful of all (cover)-versions. In 1966, he occupied top position of the british charts for 6 weeks. Which seems to curious because this was the time of the Beatles and all other pop-groups.
Distant drums is a very quit song which was tailor-made for Gentleman Jim.
