Subject: BS: More clerical abuse of children From: Raggytash Date: 21 Dec 17 - 03:04 PM Firstly, Sorry Joe I know this must be tiring for you but once again a clergyman has been sentenced to prison for abusing children. Will the various religions involved ever wake up to what is happening within their organisations. Abuse |

Subject: RE: BS: More clerical abuse of children From: bobad Date: 21 Dec 17 - 04:52 PM Not limited to christian clergy, we only hear more about them as the West has a free press and loves to sensationalize individual cases. For instance, this recent report from CBS News states that sexual abuse of children by Muslim clerics is very common in the madrassas of Pakistan but for various reasons as outlined in the link the abuse is seldom reported or prosecuted. |

Subject: RE: BS: More clerical abuse of children From: robomatic Date: 22 Dec 17 - 03:01 PM Most major religions are against sexual abuse as we understand it, but they have substantial cultural fights on their hands. The U.S. Army has had problems in Afghanistan. This abuse stems from the usual source: Asymmetrical power relations; and the more powerful feeling a lack of restraint in taking advantage of it. |

Subject: RE: BS: More clerical abuse of children From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Dec 17 - 03:09 PM Well, Raggytash, I do take some comfort in the fact that you guys have been able to find very few instances of sexual abuse of children that have taken place in the Catholic Church since the crackdown in that began 2002. It still does happen, but not with the frequency and lack of church response of previous decades. I don't think the problem is solved in the Catholic Church, but at least good progress has been made. Bobad is wrong to single out Muslims for abuse of children, although of course it does happen in Islam. An easy Google Search will find lots of it. It happens everywhere that adults have the opportunity to be alone with children. It's not something that is peculiar to religion, although there is an egregious element of hypocrisy when child abuse happens in religious groups. But child abuse and child molestation happen everywhere. This is not something where we can place the blame on "other people" and feel secure because we're not "those people." Those of you who smugly condemn others, just haven't yet seen what's also happening in the groups you identify with. It's a terrible problem and it causes terrible harm. We all must struggle to understand it and to find ways to prevent it. -Joe Offer-
-Joe- Your post popped into the bottom of the page simultaneous with the hitting of the "close thread" button after it was clear bobad was going to troll the thing to death anyway. |
