I wonderif one of our Irish friends could clear up something that I need to sort out in my mind....
How do you pronounce Howth?
The place that features in Portrait of the Artist by James Joyce.

On the Dubliners DVD . It sounds like Hoff.
On Wikipedia , it says its pronounced Hohth.

Any clarification gratefully received.

The name Howth originates from the Old Norse word hoved or hofuð, meaning "head" or "headland".
It sounds like the word "Hoe" with "th" added at the end.

Howth is at the far north end of the DART rail line, and it's one of my favorite places in Dublin. It has the beautiful Bailey Lighthouse, and a sweeping view of Dublin Bay. There are often singing sessions in Howth, but I haven't been there.
I have been to sessions in Bray, on the South end of the DART line.
Can't wait to hear your song, AL.

PS, it's Howth, not "the Howth."

Al, it's also name-checked in the first line of JJ's Finnegans wake: "riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodious vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs."

Hope this helps. ;-)

RTE's Nationeide just had a programme in various aspects of Howth. If anything you get some feel of the place and hear how the name sounds in real life.

RTE Nationwide 23 March : Howth
