Subject: Weird Songs of the 60s From: GUEST,Chris B Date: 02 May 26 - 01:06 PM Songs of the ‘60s I have three irritating folk songs I’m trying ti remember: 1 About a backwards facing grocer 2 Saturday night in a bar with all kind of antics by those there (Tom Paxton?) 3 A sing mentioning Neasden in West London and skinhead attitudes. Weird or what, but ear worms over the decades. CJB |

Subject: RE: Weird Songs of the 60s From: Nick Dow Date: 02 May 26 - 01:19 PM The Skinhead one was by Fred Wedlock (Naff all on top of my head and even less inside). The first one sounds like a Ted Heath parody (Private Eye Grocer Heath) |

Subject: RE: Weird Songs of the 60s From: Robert B. Waltz Date: 02 May 26 - 02:54 PM The second one definitely sounds like Tom Paxton's "Saturday Night." Unfortunately, my parents have that LP, not me, so I can't look up the lyrics. I can only give you a few hints.... Saturday night and the bar is packed The drinks are watered and the decks are stacked.... The chorus varies from verse to verse, but it starts with Mary and Eddie "making up for lost time in the rear" and ends with "Some damn fool is starting a fight, Why does he wait for Saturday Night?" Maybe that will help someone who has the recording remember more. :-) |

Subject: RE: Weird Songs of the 60s From: The Sandman Date: 03 May 26 - 04:02 AM Tiptoe through the kitchen By the window, that is where I'll be Come tiptoe through the turnips with me Oh, tiptoe from the oven By the recipe on the mantel piece And tiptoe through the turnips with me Arms deep in flour we'll stray We'll show Mr Pastry the way And if I kiss you in the kitchen, in the moonlight Will you pardon me? And tiptoe through the turnips with me Maybe it's flour you say will be the power of life And when I kiss you in the kitchen in the moonlight Will you pardon me and tiptoe through the turnips with me? |

Subject: RE: Weird Songs of the 60s From: Acorn4 Date: 04 May 26 - 05:16 AM "God rest ye Merry Working Men Let nothing you dismay With Grocer Heath in Downing Street And more cuts on the way He'll get his little chopper out And make things nice and gay With tidings of Barber and Heath (Sod your false teeth!) With tidings of Barber and Heath." Sung by Willie Rushton on one of those floppy 45rpm records give away with "Private Eye" at Christmas |

Subject: RE: Weird Songs of the 60s From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 04 May 26 - 06:18 AM Thanks, Acorn4: I remember that giveaway 45RPM, but could remember only the chorus, and that specifically because I had to have "Sod your false teeth" explained to me. |
