I just got back from a planning meeting for the Mariposa Folk Festival. One thing a man said there was that a lot of Toronto people in the folk clubs did not know that Mariposa was actually occurring this year. So I'm letting anybody who is going to be in Ontario the second weekend in July know that;

YES, ORILLIA, WILL HOST THE MARIPOSA FOLK FESTIVAL THIS SUMMER. JULY 7, 8, 9!!!!!!!

Oh my God, back to Orillia after all these years? (Or has it been there recently?) The burghers of Orillia have finally relented and allowed those beatniks back into their sunshiney town?

For those not familiar with the venerable Mariposa Folk Festival, it was started in Orillia, north of Toronto, in the early 60's, was soon relocated and held on--what, Centre Island?--in Toronto Harbour for many years. Then it moved to Barrie, near Orillia, for a few years but suffered from as Ian Robb said, Torontonians's reluctance to leave their city limits without a full life support system. Recently the venue has moved so many times that even old folkies have no idea if and where it is from year to year. So thanks Soph!

Willie-O
Pretty old, but not that old.

Can you e-mail the flyer details when they're available so I can gussy them up real nice and post them in musical places in Durham Region? (That's east of Toronto for you Torontonians and others) and it's just a pleasant drive up Hwy 12 to the venerable town. Or e-mail me here and we can get in touch. Or maybe Greenbank Folk Music Society has Durham (no, not the town,you midwestern Ontarians, the Region) covered? I dunno but I can sure find out.

Soph, you're great. Thanks for the info. I'll just have time for a folk blast before I head to Parry Sound for a 3-week immersion, nay, drowning, in exquisite chamber music.

Ahhh, thoughts of summer...

Yup, it's good news isn't it? Matter of fact Duckboots tells me that I'll be playing at it. Looking forward to getting back to Orillia.

Well here it is the night before it goes and I'm pissed as a lord and happier than a pig in shit, Can you tell?! Here's hoping its a good one and I'm afraid I'll miss the main stage acts for Saturday and Sunday evening as I'll be a stage hand for the beer tent, is this punishment or a reasonable compromise for a newbie?

PS, if anyone wants to catch me in performance I'll be storytelling in the folk play area early on saturday and singing on the Starport stage early on Sunday.

the problem with barrie, contrary to, or in addition to, ian robb's belief, was the venue. i went once. i didn't want to go back. there were (and are) an awful lot of marvellous festivals in ontario with both excellent performers and wonderful venues.

i can't make it to orillia, but you'll have great weather at mariposa this weekend, and i hope a good turnout and a really good time....

I'll be there with Kathy and C. Coole. It's nice to know that there is a festival that'll let you in if you play banjo. I hope there are a lot of folkies willing to travel, because there happens to be a few good folk festival events this very weekend in southern Ontario.

Hey guys, not to advertise the shy and retiring Rick Fielding or anything, but the guy is sharing the Main Stage at Mariposa with Gordon Lightfoot and Stacy Earle Saturday night. Just in case you were wondering what he did besides knowing all that folk trivia.

yours, Peter T.

So how come I'm always broke?

Oh, I know. 'Cause I keep buying all those expensive guitars!
