I was wondering if anyone knew of an online source for sheet music of Romany tunes. I'm not particularly picky, I'll work in ABC or in standard format, I'm just looking for a basis for some tunes I'm trying to compose inside a certain style (namely Russian or Near-Russian Romany Folk tunes) I've found a small handful in various collections of 'Gypsy Tunes' but I'm looking for as many as I can get my hands on. Áîëüøîå ñïàñèáî -- that looks interesting...

My understanding is that, rather than there being a separate public Rom musical tradition, it's that Rom musicians play the music of whatever country they are living in, and sometimes it gets thought of as being Rom music, because they're the ones who play it most effectively. And beside that there is Rom music that's not for the outside world to listen to or play.

I have some curiosity about The Romany. Hey, McGrath whence came you by the knowledge of 'secret' music of the Romany? Could you elucidate on the Romany as excelling as musicians?

Sorry, this isn't about the sheet music question. But there's a couple articles about Roma music at The Patrin Web Journal. The articles are in the culture section.

And here's something from the same site, in the 'occupations' section, about the 'secret' music:

"There is another, quite different type of music that is authentically Romani, a highly rhythmic progression of tones in which few or no instruments are used. The dominant sound is often that of clapping hands. This music greatly influenced the flamenco, a dance that originated in Andalusia and which has become famous throughout the world. From Andalusia this style spread across the Iberian Peninsula and then to Spanish America, until flamenco song, dance, and guitar playing became a generally accepted form of popular entertainment. This stirring music and dance, performed by proud men and women stamping their feet and snapping their fingers with awesome intensity and passion, is largely associated with the Gitanos. Nonetheless, as with so much Spanish music, what the Roma did was to adapt and popularize a dramatic and exciting dance form that is traditionally Spanish and not Romani. The same has been demonstrated for Jewish klezmer music, which features unusual scales and lively rhythms."

Shoot, forgot to mention this: On a Taraf de Haïdouks cd, Dumbala Dumba, there's a track by a guy named Napoleon and some other ursari, who are traditionally bear trainers. It's called "Hora cala ursari." This seems to be the sort of thing that the article I quoted in my previous entry was referring to. Napoleon singing, with lots of clapping, stomping and what sounds like someone slapping a bucket in the background.

I think that song is also on a Taraf de Haïdouks 'greatest hits' album, and I know it's on Ellipsis Arts' 'Unblocked' Eastern European 3-cd set.

I know that there's many more examples of 'real' Roma music out there, but that's one that I especially like.

To my experience, one of the best bands playing internal Romani music is Kalyi Jag. NIce folks also.

Hi again... This afternoon, I dug out the Taraf de Haïdouks cd I mentioned last night, and noticed that Napoleon has another song besides 'Hora Ca la Ursari' as well, 'Catar O Birto Mai Opre,' with just Napoleon singing and playing a barrel. Just trying to be accurate, hehe.

InOBU, funny you should mention them. While I was looking for the Taraf de Haïdouks cd, I found my only Kalyi Jag cd, and I now see, looking at the time of your post, that I was listening to it at the SAME TIME as you were writing that entry. ANOTHER coincidence on this thread. Spooky, eh? Heh...
